BRIDGE CITY —
After a sluggish first half, the Bridge City Lady Cardinals turned up the heat on District 21-3A rival Orangefield in the second half.
The Lady Cardinals forced the Lady Bobcats into 38 turnovers on the night, including 13 in a decisive third period that saw Bridge City go on a 13-2 run as the Lady Cardinals went on to post a 45-30 victory to stay perfect in 21-3A play.
The Lady Bobcats (4-9, 0-2) matched the physicality of Bridge City (16-2, 2-0) in the first half as the two teams were all even at 16-16 at intermission. The teams combined for 30 turnovers in the half and the Lady Cardinals went just 2-of-12 from the free-throw line in the first 16 minutes.
The tide turned quickly in the third period as Bridge City’s full-court pressure wore out the Lady Bobcats. The Lady Cardinals tallied the first eight points of the period and never had to look back.
Alexus Henry led the Lady Cardinals with 16 points, including 12 in the second half and six of BC’s first eight points of the third period.
Post Kelsey Fults tallied eight points and grabbed four boards for the Lady Cardinals. Bailee Bacon scored seven points. Power forward Kasey Frederick had five points and five boards while point guard Caylin Choate contributed five rebounds.
Brandy Ehrlich led the Lady Bobcat arsenal with nine points. Morgan Worthy, who had the only two points for Orangefield in the third period, finished with seven points and six rebounds. Maddy Ousley had five points and five rebounds. Sabryn Crain pulled down six rebounds while Priscilla Garza had five.
The Lady Bobcats finished with a slim 30-28 rebounding edge.
Bridge City also picked up 24 turnovers as defense was the theme of the night.
The Lady Cardinals struggled from the charity stripe throughout the night, finishing just 14-of-33. Meanwhile, the Lady Bobcats converted 9-of-14.
Both teams will have a busy rest of the week at the Silsbee Tournament Thursday through Saturday.
On Thursday, Orangefield will take on Jasper at 9 a.m. and Port Neches-Groves at 3 p.m. The Lady Cardinals will battle Vidor at 10:30 a.m. and will then take on Huffman at 4:30 p.m.
Both teams return to 21-3A action next Tuesday with the Lady Cardinals hosting Buna while the Lady Bobcats travel to Silsbee.
WO-S girls 73, Silsbee 34
SILSBEE — The West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs netted their first District 21-3A win of the season by throttling the Silsbee Lady Tigers 73-34 at Tiger Gym Tuesday night.
The Lady Tigers (0-2 in district) had no answer for WO-S (11-6, 1-1) guard Derriasha Daugherty, who filtered in a game-high 28 points.
Eriel Jordan and Nakaiya Platt controlled the interior for WO-S.
Jordan collected 10 points, 11 rebounds, blocked seven shots and swiped five steals while Platt added nine points and seven boards.
Lauren Samuel popped for 10 points for the Lady Stangs while Breanna Preston added nine.
WO-S will visit Beaumont Legacy Christian Friday before returning to 21-3A play next Tuesday at Hamshire-Fannett.
Redemption Academy boys 63, Bridge City 45
BRIDGE CITY — The Redemption Christian Home School Academy downed the Bridge City Cardinals 63-45 in non-district action at the Bridge City Middle School Gym Tuesday night.
Byron Bacon led the Cardinals with 16 points. Post Alex Bingham chimed in with 11 points while Kyle Bergeron had 10.
The Cardinals (5-4) slowed down 6-10 post Khadeem Latin, who has committed to Oklahoma, holding him to just seven points.
In other boys non-district action Tuesday, the Orangefield Bobcats dominated Evadale 75-48 while the West Orange-Stark Mustangs dropped a 71-50 decision to Beaumont Central.
Bridge City and Orangefield will participate in the Zavalla Tournament Thursday through Saturday.
Bridge City will play Slocum Thursday at 3:10 p.m. while Orangefield faces Chapel Hill at 7:10 p.m.
WO-S will compete in the Nederland Tournament and will open up against Port Neches-Groves Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
