Lady Bears in thick of it; Lady Bobcats host Buna

ORANGE — The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears find themselves in the heart of the playoff chase in District 20-4A action after they wrapped up the first half of district play with a critical 61-54 road win against Lumberton last Friday night.

The Lady Bears (11-15, 3-4) are in a tie with Nederland (3-4 in district) for the fourth-place playoff spot as the second half of 20-4A cranks up tonight.

The Lady Bears confused Lumberton early with their 1-1-3 zone defense limiting the Lady Raiders to just two first quarter field goals and six points while being aggressive offensively making four field goals and going 6-of-8 from the free-throw line to take a 14-6 first-quarter lead. 

The Lady Bears extended their lead to 29-20 at the half.  The Lady Raiders (2-5 in district) chipped away at the LC-M lead by hitting seven second half three-point shots and cut the Lady Bear lead to two, 53-51, late in the fourth quarter before LC-M put them away with a 8-3 run to seal the game.

Eight Lady Bears got into the scoring column.  LC-M was led in scoring by junior guard, Cassidy Webster, with 16 points.  She was followed in scoring by Tara Thompson with 10 points, while Kayleigh Roy and Savanna Smith each contributed eight points each and Josie Nimitz chipped in six points. Roy led the Lady Bears in rebounding as they dominated the boards.  Roy had 14 rebounds while freshman Sheridan Rogers pulled down seven, and Tara Thompson pulled down six.

Beaumont Ozen still sits atop the 20-4A standings with a 7-0 mark. The Vidor Lady Pirates (21-5, 6-1) are in second with Beaumont Central (5-2) in third.

The Lady Bears will host Central Tuesday and will travel to Vidor Friday. Vidor will make the long road trip to Livingston (2-5 in district) tonight.

The second half of District 21-3A opens Tuesday as well with a big game looming in Orangefield as the Lady Bobcats (12-9, 4-2) will entertain Buna (5-1 in district) with second-place on the line. Hardin-Jefferson remains atop the standings with a perfect 6-0 mark.

In other 21-3A action Tuesday the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs (1-5 in district) will welcome in the Bridge City Lady Cardinals (2-4 in district).

On Friday, Orangefield will visit Bridge City while WO-S travels to Silsbee.
