It was a tough Game One outing for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears Friday night as they dropped a 8-5 decision to the Elgin Lady Wildcats and hot-hitting Abby Prinz at The Woodlands College Park High School.
Prinz, who was 3-for-4, hit a two-run homer and capped the game with a three-run shot in the seventh to help the Lady Tigers take Game One over the Lady Bears (26-7).
Game Two of the series will be back at Woodlands College Park today at 5 p.m. Game Three, if necessary, will follow 30 minutes after Game Two.
The Lady Bears actually had one more hit then the Lady Tigers. LC-M had 11 hits while Elgin had 10.
The Lady Wildcats (24-7), District 17-4A champions, went up 2-0 in the top half of the first highlighted by Prinz, who belted a two-run home run.
Elgin tacked on three runs in the top of the third as pitcher Staci Johns put the Lady Wildcats up 5-1 with a towering three-run home run.
The Lady Bears pulled to within 5-3 after five by scoring two runs with two outs as Hope Russell and Blythe Ferguson each put together RBI singles.
Prinz fueled the Tigers’ fire again when she cranked a three-run homer to give the Lady Tigers some insurance in the top of the seventh frame to go up 8-3.
The Lady Bears kept battling as they punched in a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning behind RBI singles by Ferguson and Morgan Babineaux.
Haley Mills went 3-for-4 and scored for the Lady Bears. Russell was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Taylor Fraccastoro was 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs. Mikaela Stegall had a hit and scored twice.
Russell allowed 10 hits on the LC-M mound, striking out one and walking two. Johns got the win, allowing the 11 hits while striking out two and walking one.
The winner of the series will face the Dayton Lady Broncos in the regional quarterfinals next week. Dayton finished up a sweep of Montgomery Friday.
