Several OC tracksters punch in State Track Meet tickets

HUMBLE — A pair of Bridge City Lady Cardinals made their mark at the Class 3A Region III Track & Field Championships Friday, winning their respective events to qualify for the upcoming University Interscholastic League’s State Track & Field Championships.

Lady Cardinals Kati Thornton and Alexus Henry qualified for the State Meet by winning their specialty events.

Thornton won the pole vault, matching her season-high of 11 feet. Lorena’s Carly Campbell was second at 10-9 while Orangefield’s Brooklyn Goldsmith tied for fourth with a 8-6 effort.

Henry won the high jump by one inch with a 5-6 effort, just nipping Houston Sterling’s Sydney Edwards, who went 5-5.

WO-S’ LaShya Cole had already qualified for state in the triple jump Friday by placing second with a leap of 36-9 1/4.

The WO-S’ boys 800-meter relay unit of Johnnie Shaw, Chris James, ThoMarcus Fontenot and Deionte Thompson are headed to state as well by finishing second with a time of 1:28.04. Stafford barely nipped the Mustangs with a 1:28.01 clocking.

The Mustang 400-meter relay team of Maurice Morris, Chris James, ThoMarcus Fontenot and Johnnie Shaw placed fifth with a 42.82. Fontenot was fourth in the 100 meters in 10.94. Splendora’s Jay Bradford was first in 10.63.

James ran a sizzling 22.12 to take third in the 200 meters. Stafford’s Hezekiah Jones won with a 21.81.

The WO-S 1,600-meter relay unit of Shaw, Thompson, David Bundage and Tre Spencer placed seventh with a 3:34.46.

The Lady Mustang 400-meter relay team consisting of Cole, Betty McDonald, Chrislyn Janice and Aaliyah Teel took fifth with a 49.38. Teel also finished fourth in the 200 meters in 25.26.

The Lady Mustang 1,600-meter relay team of Cole, Janice, Mercedes Fezia, and Taylor Colbert was sixth with a 4:10.44.

Bridge City’s Henry took eighth in the 100 meters in 12.63. Silsbee’s Channiessy Fowler was first in 11.93.

Hardin-Jefferson’s 800-meter relay team of Taylor Aldrich, Keesha Broussard, Katelyn Holland and Raegan Padgett won with a 1:42.74 clocking. Padgett also won the 200 meters in 24.37.

In the shot put, Orangefield’s Priscilla Garza was ninth with a 33-11 effort. Lady Bobcat Morgan Worthy took ninth in the 800 meters with a 2:29.44.

WO-S’ Thompson barely missed a state spot after finishing third in the high jump by going 6-6. Taylor’s Kerley Mylik won with a 6-8 leap and Coldspring’s Douglas Johnson was second at 6-7.

WO-S hurdler Will Johnson finished a solid third in the 300-meter hurdles in 39.28. Waco Conally’s Marcus Howard was first with a 38.89.

Mustang David Bundage was ninth in the 800 meters in 2:09.13.

In the boys discus, Orangefield’s Mason Sonnier placed sixth with a toss of 144-0.

The University Interscholastic League State Track & Field Championships will be held May 9-10 at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin.
