PORT ARTHUR —
Little Cypress-Mauriceville is the only District 20-4A softball team still standing after the end of the Class 4A bidistrict playoffs as the Lady Bears swept Crosby by downing the Lady Cougars 6-4 in Game Two Saturday night at Port Arthur Memorial High School.
The Lady Bears (26-6) used four-hit, three-run innings in both the third and fourth frames and then held off the Lady Cougars (19-10) late.
Blythe Ferguson led an LC-M attack that notched 11 hits by going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.
“Blythe is really seeing the ball well,” said Lady Bear coach Dena Adkins. “She had a big two-run double for us last night (a 6-0 LC-M win) and got it done for us tonight too. The kids really adjusted to the pitching today and they came to play ball tonight. In Game One, they showed some nerves only with it being the first playoff game but tonight they were ready from the start.”
Once again, senior ace Hope Russell went the distance on the hill for the Lady Bears as she scattered five hits while striking out seven and walking one.
“It was another good effort by Hope,” said Adkins. “They (Crosby) made a run at us there in the sixth but the kids settled down and made some plays and we’re moving on.”
The Lady Bears will face District 17-4A champion Elgin (23-7) in the area round next week.
Crosby actually led 1-0 after two innings after a solo line-drive home run by Alexis Balderrama.
The Lady Bears got to Crosby pitcher Abby Walker in the bottom of the third.
Haley Mills drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a passed ball and to third on a Mikaela Stegall sacrifice bunt and scored off a a sharp single to left by Taylor Fraccastoro.
Russell followed with a single up the middle. Ferguson roped a RBI single that scored Fraccastoro. With two outs, Alisha Fuss drove in courtesy runner Alexie Hughes to make it 3-1.
LC-M got the bottom of the fourth going with three straight hits as Chelsey White and Mills both singled to left and Stegall reached on an infield single.
Fraccastoro plated White with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. After Russell walked, Ferguson planted a two-run bloop single into shallow left.
The Lady Cougars battled back for three runs in the top half of the sixth frame.
Cheyenne Black reached on an error. With one out, Haleigh Swinney plated pinch runner Alex Bishop with a single. Ariel Clogston made it 6-4 when she ripped a Russell offering for a two-run home run over the leftfield fence.
Kasidy Rhoudes, who had two doubles for Crosby, had a one-out double in the top of the seventh. She advanced to third on a groundout by Breanna Russell but was left stranded when Russell got Kaitlyn Slebelton to ground out to end the contest.
Fraccastoro finished 2-for-2 with two RBI while Russell was 2-for-3 for the Lady Bears.
