Big 1st frame propels Mustangs past Cardinals

WEST ORANGE — Using a monstrous six-run first inning, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs handed District 21-3A champion Bridge City their first loss in 21-3A play with a 6-3 victory at Anderson Field Tuesday night.

Mustang pitchers Aidan Anderson and Jack Dallas combined on a two-hitter as WO-S (21-4, 8-3) will head to Silsbee Friday night with the second-place playoff berth on the line.

The Cardinals (20-3-2, 10-1) utilized four pitchers in the loss and they allowed the Mustangs just five hits on the night.

Bridge City, however, could not take advantage of 12 walks and the Cardinals left 12 runners stranded on the basepaths.

Dallas went the final three frames for WO-S, allowing no hits while striking out four and walking three.

The Mustangs got six runs on four hits and saw three batters get hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first.

Grant LaPoint-Teate got on after being hit by a Chase Shugart pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball and eventually scored when a Peyton Robertson grounder was mishandled at short.

After Robertson swiped second, he scored when Grant Anderson cranked a RBI double to right centerfield. Aidan Anderson promptly stroked a RBI single up the middle to score pinch runner Kalen Garrett.

Jacob Hryhorchuk and Eric Guillory got hit by pitches to load the bases up.

Jack Dallas brought home pinch runner Chris Horn with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to make it 4-0.

Tanner Hogan followed with a RBI single that plated Hryhorchuk. LaPoint-Teate pushed it to 6-0 with a RBI double that brought home Guillory.

Shugart allowed three hits in 2/3 innings and hit three batters.

Bryson McFarland pitched the next 2 1/3 innings for the Redbirds and allowed one hit while striking out four and walking two.

Jonah Watts tossed one inning, allowing one hit while fanning one and walking one. Blaine McElduff tossed two innings of hitless ball while striking out three and walking two.

The Cardinals trimmed the margin to 6-2 in the top of the fourth off Mustang starter Aidan Anderson.

Sage Elmore drew a one-out walk and Trevor Gunn reached on a two-out walk. Senior catcher Hunter Uzzle then drilled a two-run triple to right centerfield.

Bridge City scratched in a run in the top half of the fifth frame.

Shugart, Kyle Bergeron and Ashton Hunter drew three consecutive walks by Anderson, who was replaced on the WO-S hill by Jack Dallas.

Dallas struck out Blake Pruett and Elmore answered with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Shugart. Dallas left two runners stranded as he ended the threat by fanning Bryce Carey.

Anderson worked four innings, allowing two hits while striking out one and walking nine.

Shugart had the other Cardinal hit, a single in the top of the first.

The Cardinals will host Orangefield Friday before going into the playoffs next week as 21-3A’s No. 1 seed.
