Cardinals roll past Hawks for 20th victory

BRIDGE CITY — The district champion Bridge City Cardinals pelted the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks 9-3 to continue their dominance of District 21-3A Friday night at Cardinal Field.

Kyle Bergeron got the win on the hill for the Cardinals (20-2-2, 10-0).

The Cardinals pecked in a run in the bottom of the second as Ashton Hunter reached on a walk and eventually scored on a Blake Pruett sacrifice fly. Blaine McElduff had a single and Trevor Gunn reached on an error but the Hawks didn’t absorb any more runs in the frame.

Bridge City pulled away with a four-run third frame.

Chase Shugart and Bergeron collected singles and scored off a Hunter two-run single. Pruett continued his hot hand by crushing a two-run home run to push the lead to 6-0.

Shugart made the Hawks pay again in the fourth frame when he belted a two-run home-run blast as Hunter Uzzle, who had walked, scored with him.

The Hawks picked up a pair of singles to tally a run in the top of the fifth but the Cardinals paid them back with two more of their own in the bottom of the inning.

Sgae Elmore singled, McElduff drew a walk and Gunn promptly belted a two-run single.

The Hawks, who had five errors on the night, were able to pick up two more runs in the top of the seventh.

Bergeron had a single for the Cardinals in the first inning.

The Cardinals finished with nine hits while H-J had four.

The Cardinals will wrap up the regular season next week when they visit WO-S Tuesday and host Orangefield Friday.
