Mustangs, Lady Cards snag Bear Relays titles

LITTLE CYPRESS — Utilizing their prowess in the sprints, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs edged out Beaumont West Brook while the balanced Bridge City Lady Cardinals captured the girls title at the Battlin’ Bear Relays at LC-M High School.

The Mustangs finished with 154.33 points while the Bruins had 1:50.33 as first and second-place was decided in the 1,600-meter relay in which the Mustangs won with a time of 3:34.28.

The Mustangs also won the 400-meter relay (42.7) and the 800-meter relay (1:29.72).

Mustang Colin Janice ran the fastest 100 meters in Southeast Texas this season by clocking in at 10.43. Jarrod Ross won the 200 meters in 22.34. WO-S received two more first-place finishes with Will Johnson in the 300-meter hurdles (41.44) and Jarrius Tims in the 400 meters (53.72).

The host Bears dominated the throwing events to finish a solid third.

Marvis Brown won the discus (141-3) with teammate Ethan Reed placing second (138-9). Bear Tyler Howlett claimed the shot put (51-7 1/2) with Reed placing second (48-2). Bridge City’s Aubrey Harrington won the 800 meters in 2:09.41.

The Bridge City girls have had some solid teams over the years and this Lady Cardinal team is one of their deepest.

Kaitlin Potter continued her dominance in the distance races, winning both the 3,200 meters (13:21) and the 1,600 meters (5:52). Alexus Henry won the 200 meters (25.90) and was second in both the high jump (5-4) and the triple jump (37-2) in which she set a new school record. Teammate Leslie Hendrickson won the 300-meter hurdles in 50.21.

WO-S’ Ly’Sha Cole took care of business in both the long jump (16-7) and the Triple jump (37-5 1/2).

LC-M’s Blythe Ferguson, fresh off a state championship in powerlifting, claimed the shot put (38-4 3/4) and was second in the discus (107-7). Lady Bear teammate Zoey Casteel won the pole vault with a 11-6 effort.

The next Orange CoOunty track meet will be Apr. 4 in Vidor for the Pirate Relays. SIlsbee will host the Tiger Relays this Thursday.
