Bobcats need big win at Buna

BUNA — If the Orangefield Bobcats want to stay in the playoff hunt they must snag a road victory against the Buna Cougars Friday night.

The Bobcats (4-4, 1-3) remain in the thick of the race for the third and fourth-place playoff berths out of District 21-3A with the Cougars (5-4, 2-3), Hardin-Jefferson (5-3, 2-2), and Bridge City (2-6, 1-3).

Orangefield has had time to rest up some bumps and bruises after they had a bye week.

Both the Bobcats and Cougars have lost games to West Orange-Stark the last two weeks. Orangefield fell to the Mustangs 38-14 while the Cougars got blanked 42-0.

Both teams will check in with prolific Slot-T offenses that have chewed up a lot of ground chuck.

The Bobcats are averaging 323.8 yards a game while the Cougars check in averaging 303.6 yards an outing.

Senior Carl Wiley powers the Bobcat ground arsenal with 1,048 yards and six touchdowns on 174 carries.

Quarterback Carmichael Wiley has chewed up 531 yards and six TDs on 107 totes. He has also passed for 217 yards and two TDs.

The Bobcats will face a Cougar defense that ranks second in 21-3A in allowing just 249 yards a game. Buna did allow WO-S 417 yards last week.

Buna’s ground game is sparked by Matthew Biddle. Biddle has cut loose for 866 yards and three TDs on 165 carries.

Biddle has help with backfield mates Justin Kennedy (56-324-3) and Perry Smith (66-321-4).

The Cougars are not afraid to put the ball in the air. Quarterback Joseph Clark has completed 30-of-70 passes for 528 yards and six TDs.

The Bobcat defense is allowing 293.8 yards a game.

Orangefield held off the Cougars 27-20 in an exciting matchup last year. Orangefield had 313 yards in the win while Buna had 294.

The Bobcats will play host to Orange County rival Bridge City next week. Buna, whether it wins or loses Friday, will have a bye next week as the Cougars will wait to see how all the dust settles.
