Cardinals look to rope 'Horns

BRIDGE CITY — After playing District 21-3A favorite Silsbee hard last week, the Bridge City Cardinals will turn their attention to trying to nail down that first 21-3A victory Friday night when the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns come calling to Larry Ward Stadium.

The Cardinals (1-5, 0-2) battled Silsbee tooth-and-nail last week but the Tigers were able to pull away for a 56-27 victory.

Meanwhile, the Longhorns (3-3, 1-2) got themselves back in the chase with a 42-36 win against Buna.

The Cardinals moved the ball well against the Tigers last week, totaling 386 yards.

Quarterback Chase Shugart completed 11-of-23 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown but did suffer four interceptions. He also ran for 81 yards on eight carries.

The Cardinals are averaging 243.2 yards a game. Shugart has completed 50-of-119 passes for 709 yards with five TDs and 12 interceptions.

Tailback Jonah Lemoine leads the ground game with 277 yards and four TDs on 70 carries. Malcolm Busby has hauled down 14 passes for 246 yards and three TDs while Keaton Langston has seven catches for 159 yards and three TDs.

Bridge City will face a H-F defense that has allowed 349.8 yards a game.

H-F led Buna 32-8 last week and then held on for the victory.

Led by quarterback Kendrick King, the Longhorns are averaging 349 yards a game.

King has rushed for 958 yards and 13 TDs on 142 carries. He has completed 36-of-59 passes for 551 yards and six TDs and has just two interceptions. Ryan Johnson (12-146-2), Caleb Havard (9-169-2) and Chris Jolley (8-194-2) have been his favorite targets.

H-F will face a Cardinal defense that is allowing a 21-3A high 430.7 yards a game. Silsbee gained 433 against the Cardinals last week.

The Cardinals roughed up the Longhorns in a 30-0 victory last season. The Cardinals gained 317 yards while limiting the Longhorns to just 108 total yards.

The Cardinals will venture to Sour Lake next week to take on Hardin-Jefferson while the Longhorns will play host to Silsbee.
