Pirates lambaste Raiders, 59-20

LUMBERTON — The Vidor Pirates righted the ship Friday night in Lumberton picking up their first district win with a 59-20 blowout of the Lumberton Raiders.

It was a vital win for the Pirates, who dropped their first two 20-4A games to Nederland and Beaumont Ozen.

The Pirates did not look like a team on a three game skid as they produce 564 total offensive yards and producing four turnovers on defense. The offense scored on every possession except for three, one of which ended the game with a knee. “Our offense really stepped it up tonight” said Coach Jeff Matthews. “We really got the ground game going and our defense was solid all night”.

Vidor tailback Sage Smith went over the 1,000-yard mark

The Pirates (3-3, 1-2) also collected 10 penalties for 81 yards, most of which came in the first half.

“We are still making too many mistakes that we can control.” said Matthews. “If we are going to make the playoffs and compete with Central next week we are going to have to do better.”

The Raiders fall to 0-6 overall, 0-3 in 20-4A play.

There were no shortages of offenses standouts for the Pirates. Sage Smith ran all over the Raiders picking 218 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. He eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark on the night as he now has 1,058 yards for the season.

Jeremy Stephenson also could no be stopped as he amassed 158 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Patrick Dorn added two touchdown runs of 32 and 25 late in the fourth quarter as the Pirates padded their lead. Vidor finished with 544 yards on the ground. The Pirates also racked up 34 first downs.

On defense the Pirates were lead by Steven Niemczynski who collected an interception, a fumble, and blocked a point after attempt. Reagan Lightfoot and Celly Thomas also had a fumble recovery each.

The Raiders were lead by Stephen Yarbro who passed for 176 yards going 18-for-30 and one touchdown on the night. His favorite targts were Chase Griffin and Brenner Boykin as they picked up 65 and 56 yards respectively. Brenner Boyking and Caleb Thomas each had a rushing touchdown.

After the first quarter it looked as if the Raiders might be able to trade offensive blows with the Pirates all night after easily finding the end zone on their first two drives. But after an even first quarter the Pirates went on a 25-point run to put the game well out of reach

Next week the Pirates will host the Central Jaguars for their homecoming at 7:30 while Lumberton travels to Livngston.
