SILSBEE — Bridge City will head to Tiger Stadium Friday night, trying to pull the upset over District 21-3A preseason favorite Silsbee.

The Cardinals (1-4, 0-1) are coming off a 49-7 non-district loss to the Jasper Bulldogs last week while the Tigers (4-1, 2-0) outscored the Buna Cougars 49-21 in 21-3A play.

It was Buna that defeated the Cardinals 36-7 in Bridge City’s 21-3A opener.

The Cardinal defense will face 21-3A’s most prolific offense in the forms of the Tigers, who will check in averaging 442.4 yards a contest.

Quarterback Patrick Reed, the 21-3A Most Valuable Player last season, definitely powers the Silsbee arsenal that averages a balanced 225.4 yards a game in the air and 217.0 on the ground.

Reed has completed 65-of-98 passes for 1,098 yards and has 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He’s also the team’s leading rusher with 586 yards and nine TDs on just 59 carries.

Reed has two standout receivers to go to with the likes of Zayon Jackson (31-481-6) and Chris Elam (19-339-5). Tailback Sedrick Spearman has 193 yards and two TDs on 24 totes.

The Tigers racked up 503 yards against Buna last week and will face a Cardinal defense that is allowing 430.2, including giving up 516 to Jasper last week.

The Cardinals, who are averaging 217.6 yards a contest, are led by quarterback Chase Shugart. Shugart has completed 39-of-96 passes for 493 yards and had four TDs and eight interceptions.

Tailback Jonah Lemoine is BC’s top ground gainer with 214 yards and two TDs on 55 carries.

The Tigers toppled the Cardinals 45-20 in Bridge City last season.

Reed passed for 203 yards in the victory as the Tigers outgained the Cardinals 354-152.

The Cardinals will return home next week to host the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns while the Tigers will have their bye week.
