The Orange Leader
The Vidor Pirates will look to get out of a three-game rut Friday night when they travel to Lumberton to face the winless Raiders in District 20-4A play.
The Pirates (2-3, 0-2) are coming off a tough 41-21 home loss at the hands of the Beaumont Ozen Panthers while the Raiders (0-5, 0-2) were hammered by the Beaumont Central Jaguars 46-10.
The Pirates will look to shake off giving up 492 yards to the Panthers last week in which Ozen quarterback Josh Boyd passed for 210 yards and rushed for 194 more.
Vidor running back Sage Smith did have 130 yards on 19 carries against the Panthers and now has 840 yards and 10 touchdowns for the season.
The Pirates also received 67 yards and two TDs on 12 carries by tailback Jeremy Stevenson. Freshman running back Haylon Leckelt has 175 yards for the season. Pirate quarterback Geth Simmons has completed 9-of-27 passes for 151 yards and five interceptions.
Meanwhile, the Raiders have allowed 227 points in their five losses and have scored just 50 during a rough campaign as they have lost 16 consecutive contests.
Central piled up 390 yards in the win over the Raiders last week and held Lumberton to just 146 total yards.
Coach Larry Haynes likes to put the ball up in the air. Quarterback Andrew Manley has completed 61-of-141 passes for 660 yards and has four TDs and four interceptions.
His favorite target has been Dalton Boone (28-358-3) and Chase Griffin (16-204-0). Caleb Thomas leads the ground attack with just 69 yards and a TD on 25 carries.
The Pirates tore through the Raiders in Vidor last season, winning 66-6. Vidor rang up 622 total yards, including 577 on the ground as Montana Quirante and Justin Moore combined for 275 of the yards on just 19 carries.
The Pirates will return home next week to host Beaumont Central while the Raiders make the long trek to Livingston.
