Lady Raiders down Lady Bears to move into 1st all alone

LITTLE CYPRESS — The  Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears battled hard but it was the Lumberton Lady Raiders that left the Bear Cave Friday night all alone in first-place in the District 20-4A standings.

With one match remaining in the first half of 20-4A play for all teams, the Lady Raiders improved to a perfect 6-0 after fending off the second-place Lady Bears 25-17, 25-23, 25-20.

The Lady Bears fell to 5-1 with the loss.

Sarah Woods led the LC-M offense with 10 kills. Malayzia Winbush contributed nine kills. Maddie Frey and Darby Strother had seven kills apiece while Jade Piper had six.

Piper, Cassidy Webster, Savannah Borel and Dayja Arnold all had five service points for the Lady Bears with Piper and Arnold both getting an ace apiece.

The Lady Raiders were tough across the board.

Shay Mitchell powered the Lumberton arsenal with 12 kills. She was followed closely by Emilee Sitton and Kayla Thomas, who both had 11. Brandi Dela Rosa collected 10 kills while Kelsea Hall had seven and Lauren Glover six.

Hall picked up 12 service points while Glover had nine and Allison Valastro netted seven.

Lumberton jumped up 12-7 in Game One only to see the Lady Bears trim it to 14-12. Lumberton then ran off five straight points to help seal the game.

The Lady Raiders looked in control of Game Two, darting out to a 16-8 cushion. However, the Lady Bears scratched and claw their way back to tie it at 22-22 and 23-23 before the Lady Raiders got two big kills from Sitton and Thomas.

Lumberton had a 15-9 lead in Game Three but the Lady Bears rallied to get to within 16-14 and 21-19 before the Lady Raiders closed with a 4-1 run.

The Lady Bears will make a trip to The Reservation Friday night to face the Port Neches-Groves Rock-A-Noos.

In other action Tuesday night, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats improved to 5-1 in 21-3A play by downing the Bridge City Lady Cardinals 3-1 at Cardinal Gym. BC dropped to 2-3 with the loss.

The Lady Bobcats will host first-place Hamshire-Fannett Friday while the Lady Cardinals host Hardin-Jefferson next Tuesday.

The Lady Cardinals defeated Buna 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 last Friday night.

 Alexus Henry led the way with 15 kills, and also had two aces and 17 digs. Amanda Ashby led in block stuffs with five, while Jessi Glover added 12 kills and 14 digs for the night. Gabby Smith also contributed 10 kills and three block stuffs. Caylin Choate led in digs with 22, while Olivia Bass had 35 assists and three aces.
