WO-S offense too much for Horns

FANNETT, Texas — Sophomore West Orange-Stark quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole had quite a night for himself in his first start in District 21-3A action ever, as he had his hands involved in four touchdowns, leading the Mustangs to a 36-10 victory over the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns Friday night.

He completed 9-of-15 passes for 151 yards and two scores and rushed for 70 yards and two more TDs on seven carries as WO-S (3-1, 1-0) opened defense of its 21-3A crown in fine fashion.

The Mustangs piled up 410 yards of total offense to turn back the Longhorns (2-2, 0-1).

Mustang tailback Chris James rushed for 116 yards on 12 carries while fellow tailback John Scott had 60 yards on eight totes as WO-S finished with 259 yards on the ground.

The Longhorns did manage 297 yards against the Mustang defense, thanks in part to the legs of their sophomore quarterback Kendrick King.

King darted around for 172 yards on 32 carries and passed for 84 more.

Sterling-Cole put the Mustangs on the board with 6:02 left in the first period, capping off a eight-play, 47-yard drive with a one-yard TD keeper.

Sterling-Cole then made it 12-0 with 2:19 left in the first when he broke loose on a 28-yard gallop to the end zone.

H-F trimmed the gap to 12-7 when back Jordan Sam finished off a four-play, 59-yard march with a one-yard touchdown with 6:22 left in the half.

The Mustangs went up 19-7 with 5:08 in the half when Scott completed a five-play, 49-yard march with a touchdown bolt of nine yards.

The Longhorns pulled to within 19-10 when kicker Jorge Alvarado nailed a 30-yard field goal with 2:08 before the half.

WO-S quickly put a damper on the Longhorns’ spirit when Sterling-Cole teamed up with receiver Will Johnson on a 51-yard touchdown strike with 1:56 left as the Mustangs went into the half with a 26-10 edge.

The Mustangs received a 25-yard field goal from kicker Rodrickson Cano with 8:33 left in the third.

Sterling-Cole capped off the night engineering a eight-play, 91-yard scoring drive when he connected with receiver Deionte Thompson on a 31-yard touchdown.

The Mustangs were flagged 12 times for 100 yards while the Longhorns had just one penalty for five yards.

H-F receiver Caleb Havard had three catches for 89 yards.

The Mustangs will welcome Hardin-Jefferson to Dan R. Hooks Stadium next week. The Hawks had their bye Friday night. Meanwhile, the Longhorns will look to bounce back on the road at Orangefield.
