14-run fifth ignites Cards past H-J

SOUR LAKE — Utilizing an incredible 14-run fifth inning, the Bridge City Cardinals cruised past the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks 19-6 in District 21-3A action Tuesday.

The Cardinals (14-2-2, 4-0) struck for three runs in the first.

Keaton Langston singled while Hunter Uzzle was hit by a pitch and Chase Shugart walked.

Kyle Bergeron drew a bases-loaded walk to score one run while a wild pitch accounted for another.

BC tacked on two runs in the bottom of the second.

Ashton Hunter laced a single and Baline McElduff and Trevor Gunn drew back-to-back walks and Uzzle answered with a two-run double.

THe Hawks answered with two runs in the third and four more in the fourth to take a 6-5 edge.

Then the bottom fell out on the Hawks.

The Cardinals poured out seven hits in the wild bottom of the fifth.

Sage Elmore led off with a walk followed by a Jonah Watts single and Hunter reached on an error. McElduff and Langston had back-to-back bases-loaded walks to score runs.

Uzzle was hit by a pitch to score another run. Shugart then came up with a two-run single.

Hunter cranked out a two-run double in the frame and Langston had an RBI double. Uzzle capped it with a two-run single.

The Cardinals finished with 10 hits while the Hawks had six.

Bridge City will welcome Orange County rival WO-S Friday in a battle for first-place as both teams stand 4-0.
