District hoop season getting into high gear

ORANGE — Now that all of the holiday dust has been settled and hoop teams have wrapped up tournaments, it’s time to start a new year as everybody dives into the heart of their respective district play.

In District 21-3A play, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs (13-8, 2-0) have gotten off to a splendid start, defeating Hardin-Jefferson 45-43 (22-2, 0-1) in their last 21-3A game before the holidays.

The Mustangs then went on to capture four straight games to win the Bayou Classic Tournament hosted by Bridge City and Orangefield.

WO-S is currently tied with Silsbee (14-7, 2-0) atop the 21-3A standings. Bridge City (10-9, 1-0) is currently a half game back after the Cardinals defeated Buna (12-8, 0-2) in their 21-3A opener. Orangefield (12-6, 1-1) is definitely in the mix after the Bobcats defeated Hamshire-Fannett (7-13, 0-2).

There are pivotal games this Friday when Bridge City travels to Silsbee, H-F welcomes in Buna, and Orangefield travels to Sour Lake to take on H-J. WO-S has a bye date Friday.

Next Tuesday will pit WO-S at Orangefield, H-F at Bridge City, and H-J at Buna with Silsbee getting a bye date.

Three teams are out of the District 20-4A gate with a fast start.

Beaumont Central (15-4, 2-0), Nederland (16-6, 2-0) and Port Neches-Groves (7-11, 2-0) are sitting atop the standings.

Beaumont Ozen (9-9, 1-1) and Livingston (8-9, 1-1) are both a game back while Little Cypress-Mauriceville (9-12, 0-2), Lumberton (6-17, 0-2) and Vidor (5-12, 0-2) are each just two games back.

LC-M will be riding some momentum Friday when they host Nederland with the varsity starting around 6 p.m. The Bears just wrapped up a second-place finish in the Bayou Classic.

Other 20-4A Friday tilts include PN-G at Central, Ozen at Livingston, and Lumberton at Vidor.

20-4A games next Tuesday will include LC-M at Ozen, Vidor at Central, Livingston at Lumberton and Nederland at PN-G.

On the girls’ side of the ledger, the Hardin-Jefferson Lady Hawks are off to a 3-0 start in 21-3A play along with the Buna Lady Cougars as they are tied atop the standings.

The Orangefield Lady Bobcats are on their heels though, standing 11-8 overall and 3-1 in 21-3A play.

Both the Bridge City Lady Cardinals and Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns stand at 1-2 in loop play while the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs are 1-3 and the Silsbee Lady Tigers are at 0-4.

Orangefield will host H-J in a pivotal matchup Friday while Silsbee travels to Bridge City and WO-S has a bye. Next Tuesday will pit Orangefield at WO-S and H-F at Bridge City.

In District 20-4A play, the Vidor Lady Pirates (3-1) and LC-M Lady Bears (2-2) definitely remain in the hunt with 10 games remaining.

On Friday, the Lady Bears venture to Nederland (1-3) while the Lady Pirates head to Lumberton (2-2). On Tuesday, the Lady Bears will host the state’s top-ranked team in Beaumont Ozen (4-0) while the Lady Pirates entertain a tough Beaumont Central (3-1) unit.
