CHANNELVIEW — The West Columbia Roughnecks got “roughed” up by the vaunted West Orange-Stark “Chain Gang Defense” and then faced a barrage of Dillon Sterling-Cole touchdown passes as the Mustangs stormed to a 61-7 Class 3A Region III Division I area round playoff victory at Maddry Stadium at Channelview High School Friday night.

The Mustangs (10-1) limited the Roughnecks (4-7) to just 35 total yards and five turnovers while Sterling-Cole tossed five touchdown passes and ran for another.

The Mustangs ran up 475 yards of total offense. Sterling-Cole completed 15-of-26 passes for 271 yards. He has thrown for 11 TD passes in his two playoff starts.

Receiver Will Johnson caught five passes for 109 yards and two TDs while fellow receiver Dwain Boullard also had two TD catches and rushed for another.

Chase Rutledge had a big game on the ground, bruising his way to 108 yards and a TD on 16 carries.

“Our kids got after it tonight and played a physical football game the entire game,” said Mustang coach Cornel Thompson. “There was some hitting going on. That was by far the best game we’ve put together and we did it on the road.”

Thompson was very pleased with the offensive effort.

“We really moved the ball at will in the air and on the ground,” said  Thompson. “Dillon had another superb night throwing the ball and our receivers when out and caught them. Really pleased with all those guys. You don’t see us drop many passes this year. I’m also really proud of Chase Rutledge. He ran the ball hard and when he gets steam going and running north, he’s a hard guy to run into if you’re playing defense.”

The Mustangs will now face old rival Jasper in the Region III semifinals next week. Jasper downed Waco La Vega Friday night.

WO-S and Jasper was supposed to play a non-district game in Jasper in late September but that game was called due to inclimate weather conditions.

“We know what Jasper is about and they know what we’re about,” said Thompson. “They have a lot of good athletes and so do we. It should be a good one.”

The two teams will likely play at Humble’s Turner Stadium next Friday at 7 p.m.

Roughneck standout sophomore running back Dakarius Bell, who had more than 1,400 yards entering the game, had just nine carries for 23 yards before going down with an injury with 1:17 left in the first half. He finished with 20 yards on 10 totes.

The Mustangs wasted little time on their first series, going 55 yards to paydirt in just five plays.

Chris James ran for a 14-yard gain and then scored on a beautifully executed 41-yard screen pass from Sterling-Cole. James caught it in the right flat and raced 41 yards down the right sideline for six. Jack Dallas booted the extra-point as WO-S led 7-0 with 7:38 remaining in the first period.

WO-S got good field position at the Roughneck 40 with 9:15 left in the half when defensive back Deionte Thompson deflected a punt by Zach Dodds that ended up going just four yards.

The Mustangs then grinded their way to the end zone in nine plays. Cole connected with Tre Spencer on a 13-yard strike on the march and found Johnson for 10 more that got to the WC 4. Three plays later, Sterling-Cole, on an excellent play-action pass, found Johnson in the right corner of the end zone for a three-yard touchdown strike. The extra-point was missed as WO-S led 13-7 with 4:37 left in the half.

Roughneck return man Lamarquis Fields woke up the WC faithful when he brought the ensuing kickoff back all the way down to the Mustang 4.

Two plays later, Kesee took it in on a two-yard sneak. Kicker Jacob Comer nailed the point-after to trim the lead to 13-7 with 4:14 in the half.

That only made the Mustang offense ‘mad.”

WO-S took the leather from their own 25 and went 75 yards in nine plays. Sterling-Cole completed five passes for 61 yards on the march and capped it off when he found a wide open Boullard in the middle of the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown toss. Fullback Tre Baldwin ran in the two-point conversion, making it 21-7 with 1:33 in the half.

Kesee fumbled the ball over to Tavin Terrell and the Mustangs at the WC 11 with 1:02 in the half but the Mustangs failed to capitalized as Sterling-Cole was sacked on both third and fourth down.

Sterling-Cole completed 11-of-20 passes for 129 yards in the first half.

On the third play from scrimmage in the third period, Sterling-Cole hit Johnson on a perfectly developed screen pass and Johnson did the rest, going 79 yards down the left sideline and carrying a Roughneck defender into the end zone with him to up the margin to 27-7 with 10:56 in the third.

On the ensuing WC series, Terrell picked off a Kesee pass at the Roughneck 46 and returned it 32 yards to the 14. Three plays later Sterling-Cole kept the ball and went around right end for a 13-yard score, increasing the margin to 34-7 with 9:43 in the third.

Things started snowballing more for the Roughnecks on the chilly night.

Bell coughed up the leather to Mustang defensive lineman Mandel King at the WC 40 with 8:59 left in the third. WO-S found the end zone nine plays later when linebacker Elijah Teel, playing fullback, bruised his way in for a three-yard score, upping it to 40-7 with 4:38 in the third.

WO-S went up 47-7 with 1:38 in the third when a scrambling Sterling-Cole connected with Boullard with a 47-yard touchdown strike down the right sideline.

Mustang defensive back Kalen Garrett pounced on a WC fumble at the Roughneck 30 and the Mustangs scored again five plays later on a one-yard Rutledge keeper with 11:07 remaining.

Boullard added to the Roughnecks’ misery when he capped off a six-play, 40-yard drive with a 27-yard touchdown scamper around the right end to make it 61-7 with 6:07 remaining.
