Bears need 'W' against Jags to net berth

Win and they are in.

That’s what the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears have to do Saturday night when they visit the Beaumont Central Jaguars at the Carroll ”Butch” Thomas Center.

The Bears (4-4, 3-2), with a win, would clinch a playoff berth out of District 20-4A. The Jaguars (2-6, 2-3) have to beat the Bears to stay in the chase.

The Bears are coming off a blitzing 37-6 win against Lumberton last week while the Jaguars dropped a tough 28-20 decision in Livingston.

The Bears will turn to a balanced attack against the Jaguars.

Senior tailback Alex Sezer has dashed through opposing defenses for 1,159 yards and 15 touchdowns on 181 carries.

Bear quarterback Caleb Harley is closing in on the 1,000-yard mark. He’s completed 60-of-119 passes for 955 yards and 10 TDs with seven picks.

Harley has three solid targets in receivers Casey Viator (21-237-2), Dalton Doyle (19-407-5) and Billy Jones (17-253-2).

Quarterback Robert Mitchell is the “man” who makes the Jaguars purr.

Mitchell has completed 115-of-209 passes for 1,444 yards and 10 TDs with six interceptions. He will face a stern Bear secondary led by Dylan Gruber and Teondre Gant.

He has three favorite targets as well in Landen Malbrough (26-446-4), Garrison Mitchell (32-435-4) and Nicalus Rhone (32-379-1).

Mitchell is also Central’s leading rusher with 519 yards and nine TDs on 121 carries. Tailback Kamon Darby has 230 yards and a TD on 58 totes. The Bears close out the regular season at home next week against Vidor while the Jaguars travel to first-place Nederland.
