The Orange Leader
Josh Smalley’s Orangefield Bobcats knew going into Friday night’s game against the Hardin Jefferson Hawks they were more than likely not going to duplicate last week’s 590 rushing yards.
The only part Smalley was worried about duplicating was being able to put a second W in the win column.
Mark it off coach.
The Bobcats defeated the Hawks 19-14 and this time rushed for still quite a number of yard yet it was 307 that was enough to get the win.
Orangefield was powered by a duo of runners getting 97 yards as Eric Truncale had his on 12 carries with two scores and Carl Wiley had 97 yards on 18 carries with one score.
“We were able to move the ball real well early and then we had a turnover and a few penalties that slowed us down,” Smalley said after his Bobcats improved to 2-1 in District 21-3A play and 3-4 overall. “Part of this game is being in close games and having to battle it out to the end. We are happy for the kids and I happy for my assistant coaches. They deserve another win in district and now we can start preparing to play the Houston Texans next week, oops the West Orange-Stark Mustangs, my mistake.”
Orangefield was hanging to a 12-7 lead in the fourth quarter since the first play of the second quarter when Hardin-Jefferson got on the board. The score remained the same up until Orangefield got a 37-yard touchdown from quarterback Eric Truncale. David Rainey’s kick made it 19-7 with 6:17 left in the game.
Orangefield could then not run enough time off the clock after having another possession with the football yet not getting a first down.
Hardin-Jefferson had 2:35 left in the game to try to get two scores yet their possession had 10 plays and only left :25 remaining on the clock.
Travis Stephens at that time had a 18-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Jared Gieseke and a PAT made the final score. The Hawks attempt at an onside kick failed and Orangefield was able to take a knee.
Friday night’s game started out like it would be another high-scoring night for the Bobcats as Orangefield marched 95 yards on 10 plays in its first series.
Truncale capped the drive with a 13-yard touchdown run. A two-point conversion failed.
Carmichael Wiley had a huge 39 yard run in the drive while Tyron Como had a 11 yard run in the drive as well.
It was then 3-and-out for the Hawks and the lack of defense proved deadly for the visiting team.
Orangefield quickly marched down field with Carl Wiley picking up a 24-yard run in the drive and he capped it with a 7-yard touchdown run. Another two point try failed to make it 12-0.
Hardin-Jefferson then had a short field after an Orangefield penalty and the Hawks scored when Dylan Vannoy made one of the best catches in the area this year.
Robertson was able to pull in a pass from Gieseke between two defenders and hang on to the ball for a 15-yard score. Robertson kicked the extra point to make it 12-7.
The game then stopped with the scoring until the fourth quarter which was fine for Smalley since it was his Orangefield team was the one with the win. Now the Bobcats must face a team no Orangefield team has ever defeated, the Mustangs.
“That team is the model of success in all of Southeast Texas,” Smalley said. “Every team around wants to model after them and be where those guys are. It is always a challenge. Our kids know all about the Mustangs and how many kids they have going to play at the next level. We have a ton of respect for those guys but we are going to show up and play football. We never back away from a team because why show up this week to practice and watch hours of film if you think you have no shot to win? There will be an Orangefield team one day beat West Orange-Stark Mustangs so why not think we can be that team? We respect them and their coaching staff so much but we work hard to play this game too and we want a victory just like they do.”
