Mustangs scoot past Bobcats, 74-46

WEST ORANGE — Utilizing a 25-4 run in the second quarter, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs strolled to a 74-46 District 21-3A victory over the Orangefield Bobcats Tuesday night at Mustang Gym.

The Mustangs (16-7, 3-0), ranked No. 7 in the latest TABC Class 3A state poll, trailed the Bobcats (11-9, 0-4) 12-10 late in the first period.

However, the Mustangs scored the last five points in the quarter and finished the half with a 30-4 blitz to lead 40-16 at intermission.

Laquarious Paige and Deionte Thompson got the Mustangs going early, combining for 26 first-half points.

Paige finished with 21 points and five rebounds while Thompson had 17 points and eight boards.

The two combined for 18 points in the second period with Thompson scoring 11 of them. The Mustangs full-court pressure finally wore down the Bobcats in the second period as Orangefield had 10 of their 25 turnovers in the quarter.

The Bobcats fought hard in the third quarter as the two teams put up 19 points apiece.

The Bobcats received two three-pointers from Dane Risinger while Matthew Kress scored six of his team-high 11 points in the quarter.

The Mustangs closed out the contest by outscoring the Bobcats 15-11 in the last eight minutes.

Post Ty Thompson had 10 points and five rebounds for the Mustangs while Chase Rutledge had seven points and Corey Carcisse added seven rebounds.

Carl Wiley had nine points and led the Bobcats with five rebounds while Carmicheal Wiley added five points.

The Mustangs were dominant on the boards, outrebounding the Bobcats 36-20.

The Mustangs had 14 turnovers and went 9-of-11 from the free-throw line while the Bobcats were just 5-of-13 from the charity stripe.

The Mustangs, who defeated two ranked Class 2A teams during the Christmas break in Kountze and East Chambers, will look to continue their good fortunes Friday when they visit the Buna Cougars. The Mustangs will return home next Tuesday to take on Bridge City and will take on the Silsbee Tigers Jan. 17.

The Bobcats will be looking for their first 21-3A victory next Tuesday when they play host to Buna.
