HOOP WRAP: Mustang press wears out H-F

ORANGE — West Orange-Stark’s full-court pressure wore down the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns in the second half as the Mustangs captured a 71-44 victory to open up District 21-3A play Tuesday night at Mustang Gym.

With the game knotted up at 25-25 at halftime, the Mustangs exploded on a 28-7 run in the third period to easily pull away for the win.

Senior Laquarious Paige scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter to spark the run.

The Mustangs converted on eight three-point shots in the second half. Paige finished with three three-pointers. Corey Carcisse also had three treys and finished with nine points while Tavin Terrell hit two three-pointers and had eight points and six rebounds.

Paige led the Mustangs with seven boards.

Post Ty Thompson collected 10 points and snagged five boards. Carcisse finished with six rebounds while Dorsey Robinson, Chase Rutledge and Deionte Thompson all had five rebounds.

Post Paul Schneider led the Longhorns with 18 points and nine rebounds. Forward Jordan Johnson contributed 11 points and six rebounds while Caleb Havard and Brock Thewman each had six points and five rebounds.

Turnovers were definitely the story as the Mustangs forced the Longhorns into 33 miscues that turned into big baskets, especially in the second half.

The Mustangs, who had 21 turnovers of their own, finished with a 39-31 rebounding edge.

WO-S finished 8-of-13 from the free-throw line while the Longhorns were just 5-of-12.

H-F led 15-13 at the end of the first period with Schneider scoring six points inside. Paige kept the Mustangs in the hunt with eight points in the quarter.

The Mustangs forced 10 H-F turnovers in the second period to knot things up at the half.

WO-S went on to score 20 of the first 22 points in the third. Paige got it going with a three-point bomb and Terrell hit back-to-back treys on consecutive trips and the Mustangs never looked back from that point.

The Mustangs led 53-32 at the end of the third and Carcisse added to the Longhorns’ misery when he drained two of his three-pointers in the final period.

The Mustangs will look to continue their winning ways Friday when they head to Sour Lake to face Hardin-Jefferson while the Longhorns will play host to Orangefield.

In other 21-3A action Tuesday night, Silsbee took down Orangefield 86-59 and Buna dropped Bridge City 50-35.

Orangefield will travel to Hamshire-Fannett Friday while Bridge City heads to Evadale in non-district action.
