Size, depth lead Jaguars past Mustangs in hoop opener

WEST ORANGE — West Orange-Stark battled a very talented Beaumont Central team hard for four quarters. However, depth and height simply wore down the Mustangs.

The Jaguars, early District 20-4A favorites along with Nederland, flexed their muscles by downing WO-S 62-44 in the season opener for both squads at Mustang Gym Tuesday night.

Central (1-0) suited out 15 players while Mustang coach Jason Wilkins suited out only eight. WO-S (0-1) has five players, including possibly three starters, that are still involved with the football team and the playoffs.

The Mustangs were with the services of last year’s top two leading scorers in juniors Laquarious Paige and Brandon Joubert.

Joubert and Paige accounted for 42 of WO-S’ 44 points. Joubert zipped through the lane to score a game-high 23 points while Paige filtered in 19 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Etorian Wilridge was a “beast” inside for the Jaguars. The 6-7 post collected a double-double, scoring 20 points while yanking down 12 rebounds.

The much bigger Jaguars outrebounded the Mustangs 43-27.

Miguel Pearson pumped in 14 points and had six boards for Central. Marquis Jones poured in 12 points and snagged nine rebounds while Tyrone Atwood contributed eight points and 10 rebounds.

Cory Carcisse led the Mustangs with 10 rebounds while post Tyrant Thompson pulled down six.

The Jaguars jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter with Wilridge bruising his way in the paint for eight points.

WO-S pulled to within 26-19 at intermission as Paige and Joubert scored all 19 first-half points.

The Mustangs got as close as 30-26 early in the third period but Central scored nine of the last 11 points to take a 39-28 edge heading to the final period.

The Jaguars outscored the Mustangs 23-16 in the final period.

Both teams finished with 15 turnovers.

The Mustangs were a solid 8-of-9 from the free-throw line while the Jaguars converted just 6-of-15.

WO-S will return to action Monday when they travel to Woodville to take on the Eagles.
