The Orange Leader
Scoring 28 unanswered points in the second half, the Dayton Broncos spoiled Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s first playoff appearance since 1997 by downing the Battlin’ Bears 49-16 at the Thomas Center in Beaumont Saturday night in Class 4A Region III Division II action.
The Bears (5-5) fought hard in the first half but had no answer for the Broncos (6-5) after intermission.
The Broncos forced the Bears into five turnovers and the Bears also had 10 penalties for 125 yards.
Dayton only outgained the Bears 352-340.
“We made way too many mistakes and you can’t do that in the playoffs and against a team like Dayton,” said LC-M coach Randy Crouch. “The turnovers and the penalties, they both killed us. Dayton took advantage of everything we did wrong, that’s for sure.”
Dayton quarterback Triston Baughman completed 10-of-12 passes for 203 yards and two interceptions.
Receiver Jacarious Keener brought back the game’s opening kickoff 98 yards for a score and also hauled in a touchdown pass.
LC-M quarterback Caleb Harley completed 10-of-27 passes for 150 yards and four interceptions.
Bear tailback Brandon Toliver had 108 yards on 25 carries while receiver Coby Roddy had five receptions for 76 yards.
Getting nice field position at the Bear 39 on their first series of the second half, the Broncos ate up the yardage in five plays and back Kyle McBride finished it with a eight-yard scamper around the right end to up the lead to 28-16 with 9:25 in the third.
The Broncos scored again the next time they got it, going 73 yards in six quick plays. Baughman connected with Keener on a perfect 34-yard bubble screen to the Bear 2 and Baughman capped it with a two-yard plunge to make it 35-16 with 7:06 in the third.
Dayton moved 61 yards on six plays to hit paydirt again on their next handle.
There was a big fight by the two teams that delayed the game for about 10 minutes. McBride finished the wild and ridiculous series with a six-yard touchdown dart around right end to up the margin to 42-16 with 2:25 in the third.
After getting an interception, the Broncos started at the Bear 16 and scored five plays later on a one-yard keeper by Baughman with 11:48 remaining.
It was a wild and crazy first half with a slew of big plays and there were also five turnovers.
The Broncos opened the game with plenty of flair as Jacarius Keener took the opening kickoff and bolted 98 yards untouched for a touchdown. Kicker Omar Serrano booted the extra-point as Dayton led 7-0 with 11:45 in the first period.
LC-M got even on their first series. Toliver brought the ensuing kickoff back 48 yards to the Bronco 49 and the Bears found the end zone eight plays later on a one-yard sneak by Harley. Kicker Trent Manuel nailed the point-after to tie it up with 7:38 in the first. Harley connected with receiver Coby Roddy on a big 19-yard connection on the drive and the Broncos had a crucial defensive holding as well.
The Bears pooched the next kickoff and Bay Quebodeaux fell on the ball at the Dayton 41.
LC-M quickly marched towards the end zone and Toliver scored from eight yards out. However, the Bears were charged with a chop block to negate it. The Bears tried to get a 40-yard field goal from Manuel but the Broncos blocked it.
Dayton then marched 73 yards in eight plays to regain the lead.
Baughman hit Isaiah Chambers with a big 21-yard pass play and capped off the drive by connecting with Keener in the back of the end zone for a nine-yard TD pass to make it 14-7 with 2:13 in the first.
After Harley hit Dalton Doyle for a 27-yard dart to the Bronco 42, the Broncos got the ball back two plays later when defensive back Caleb Brooks picked off Harley at the 31.
Baughman and the Broncos used a big play to score again. The scrambling quarterback eluded a pair of Bears and hit wide open receiver Landen Tomlin, who took it 68 yards down the left sideline. Baughman capped it with a one-yard touchdown plunge to make it 21-7 with 0:12 in the first.
The Bears kept battling and got back on the board again on their next series.
Toliver broke loose for a 40-yard gallop to the Bronco 32.
Five plays later on third-and-5 from the 16 the Bears used a little trickery as receiver Teondre Gant reversed field, took a handoff from Harley and then threw a 16-yard TD strike to tight end Matthew Chitty. The Broncos blocked the extra-point attempt but the Bears cut it to 21-13 with 7:29 in the half.
The two teams traded a pair of turnovers with Bear defensive back Dalton Doyle getting two of them.
The Bears got into the red zone twice but failed to get the ball in the end zone.
Doyle picked off Baughman at the Dayton 43 and returned it to the Bronco 16 with 0:18 left.
LC-M tried three passes to try to get a touchdown but Dayton defended them well. Manuel came in and booted a 33-yard field goal as time expired in the half to make it 21-16.
The Bears outgained the Broncos 208-173 in the half.
Toliver had 86 yards on 18 carries. Harley was 7-of-15 for 109 yards and two interceptions.
Baughman was 6-of-8 for 144 yards and had two interceptions on two nice plays by Doyle.
Despite trailing at the half, the Bears ran 25 more plays at 41-16.
“We had several opportunities to punch it in there in the first half and just couldn’t do it,” said Crouch. “We moved the ball well, we just couldn’t get it done with the penalties and turnovers.”
Crouch was proud of the way the Bears competed all season.
“I’m proud of this senior group and they set the tone for us all year,” said Crouch. “Hopefully we can build on this and come back again next year and do it again.”
