Lady Raiders dash past LC-M to move into second

LITTLE CYPRESS — It was tough sledding for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears Friday night as they battled the Lumberton Lady Raiders for sole possession of second-place in the District 20-4A standings as the first half of district play wrapped up.

The Lady Bears simply had no answer in trying to stop Lady Raider Meagan Worry and they were cold from the field throughout the night as the Lady Raiders waltzed out of The Bear Cave with a decisive 72-35 victory.

Worry torched the Lady Bears (16-12, 5-2) throughout the night as she put together 25 points to go along with 15 rebounds.

Worry set the tone for the Lady Raiders (21-4, 6-1) in the first half as she tallied 18 points, helping her squad to a 43-16 lead at intermission.

The Lady Raiders raced out to a 19-5 cushion at the end of the first period against the cold Lady Bears.

LC-M finished the night 14-of-72 from the field and just 6-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Worry tallied 12 of her points during a 24-11 run in the second period while point guard Allison Jacks connected on two of her four three-pointers in the game.

The Lady Raiders, who saw all 10 of their players reach the scoring column, extended their lead to 59-24 to end the third period.

Post player Tori Thompson led the Lady Bears with 12 points while she also pulled down six rebounds while fellow post Malaysia Winbush contributed a double-double, scoring 10 points while yanking down 14 rebounds.

The Lady Bears outrebounded Lumberton 49-36 but failed to convert on a slew of point-blank shots around the basket.

Cassidy Webster had 10 rebounds for LC-M while Maddie Frey and Grace Chen added five boards apiece.

The Lady Bears finished with 21 turnovers while the Lady Raiders had just 14.

Jacks finished with 12 points and teammate Taylor Powell also scored 12. Jacks also finished with five rebounds while Worry also found time to snag six steals and she also blocked five shots. Lumberton finished 7-of-12 from the free-throw line.

The Lady Bears have dropped their last two games, falling to first-place Beaumont Ozen 52-42 last Tuesday. However, they remain all alone in the third-place spot. The top four teams will advance to the postseason.

The Lady Bears will look to bounce back Tuesday when they visit Beaumont Central to face the Lady Jaguars.
