GIRLS HOOP WRAP: Lady Bears zap Nederland to go to 5-0 in 20-4A

LITTLE CYPRESS —  Don’t let the final score fool you, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears had to work hard to improve to 5-0 in District 20-4A play Friday evening against some scrappy Nederland Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Bears found themselves down 28-27 entering the fourth quarter. However, using a tenacious defense, the Lady Bears went on a 19-8 tear in the final eight minutes to pull away for the win.

Nederland’s Christine Porterfield tied the game up at 34-34 with 3:38 remaining and the Lady Bears went on to score 12 of the final 14 points.

Cassidy Webster, who led the Lady Bears with 19 points, scored eight of her points in the last 4:40. Josie Nimitz, who had eight points, converted a pair of steals into layups late to help spearhead the run.

Malayzia Winbush added nine points for LC-M while Maddie Frey had six.

Lauren Crenshaw led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points while Porterfield had 11.

The Lady Bears, who are tied with Beaumont Ozen for first-place, will visit Ozen Tuesday and will travel to third-place Lumberton next Friday.

The Lady Bears continued their winning ways last Tuesday by taking down the Orangefield Lady Bobcats 49-33 in non-district action at Bobcat Gym.

The Lady Bears held the Lady Bobcats without a field goal in the first half, limiting Orangefield to just one point at the end of the third period and LC-M led 23-7 at intermission.

However, Orangefield battled hard, going on a 17-10 run in the third period to get to within 33-24 before LC-M closed with a 16-9 spurt in the final period.

The teams combined to shoot 62 free throws.

LC-M made 21-of-35 charity shots while the Lady Bobcats converted just 12-of-27.

Guard Grace Chen led the Lady Bear attack with 17 points while Cassidy Webster chimed in with 11.

LC-M outrebounded Orangefield 34-21.

Tori Thompson had seven points and nine boards for the Lady Bears while Malayzia Winbush contributed six points and 1- rebounds.

Emilee Adrio led the Lady Bobcats with 10 points while Morgan Worthy had eight and Sabryn Crian six.

Crain, Kaylyn Nelson and Worthy each pulled down four rebounds.

The Lady Bobcats comitted 30 turnovers, 22 coming in the first half, while the Lady Bears had 25.

The Lady Bears will play host to Nederland in 20-4A play Friday while the Lady Bobcats travel to Sour Lake to take on Hardin-Jefferson in 21-3A action.

BC girls 56, Silsbee 20

SILSBEE — The Bridge City Lady Cardinals moved to a perfect 4-0 in District 21-3A action by defeating the Silsbee Lady Tigers 56-20 at Tiger Gym Friday night.

Post Kelsey Fults paced the 10th-ranked Lady Cardinals with a big double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

Alexis Henry also fired in 16 points.

Kasey Frederick tallied nine points with Bailee Bacon adding seven.

Caylin Choate had another feisty game, dishing off 13 assists while swiping five steals.

The Lady Cardinals raced out to an 18-2 lead at the end of the first period and led 37-6 at intermission.

The Lady Cardinals return home Tuesday to take on Hamshire-Fannett.
