Cards, Cats, Pirates win big in Evadale

EVADALE —
It was a banner day for Orange-area teams in the second day of the Evadale Tournament Friday.
On the boys’ side, Orangefield, Bridge City and Deweyville all nabbed victories while the Deweyville Lady Pirates picked up a win as well.
Orangefield (4-1) throttled Hemphill 65-37 behind Zach Hayes’ 28-point, 11-rebound effort.
Bridge City (7-1), behind the “Twin Towers” of Tanner Girouard and Nathan McAnelly, who combined for 31 points and 23 rebounds, took down the Warren Warriors 58-46.
Colby Caswell exploded for the Pirates, tallying a whopping 38 points, to lead Deweyville (3-3) to a 85-61 win over Hemphill.
The Deweyville Lady Pirates took down District 23-2A rival Warren 42-41.
The Evadale Lady Rebels downed the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs 43-31.
Many games are scheduled for today.
Orangefield, which won Pool 1, will face either Warren or Hamshire-Fannett at 9 a.m. in the semifinals. Bridge City, winner of Pool 2, will face Deweyville at 10:30 a.m. The winners of those games will battle in the championship game at 6 p.m. while the losers will play for third at 4:30 p.m.
The Lady Mustangs will face either Starks (La.) or Burkeville in the third-place game at 1:30 p.m. The Lady Pirates will meet Buna in the consolation finals at noon.
The Bobcats used a 17-7 spurt to pull away from the Hornets in the first half and then outscored them 34-19 in the second half.
Hayes was consistent throughout and scored eight points each in the middle two quarters.
Julian Morgan tallied nine points for the Bobcats while Garrett Granger added eight.
Forward Tommy Singleton led the Hornets with 16 points and nine rebounds while Preston Packard pumped in 10 points.
Orangefield finished with a 27-23 rebounding edge. The Bobcats forced Hemphill into 17 turnovers while committing just 10 of their own. The Bobcats finished 10-of-15 from the free-throw line while the Hornets went just 6-of-14.
Bridge City controlled the tempo in its win over Warren with tremendous ball movement along with its strong post play.
Girouard powered the Cardinals early with eight first-period points, He finished with 16 points and eight boards.
Bridge City closed the half with a 13-5 spurt and had a comfortable 31-15 lead at intermission.
McAnelly was a “monster” on the boards as he finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Zach Heinze and Justin Pittman chipped in with eight points apiece while Tyler Hyde had seven.
Cody Andrew paced the Warriors with 15 points while Blake Riley contributed 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Cardinals dominated the glass, outrebounding the Warriors 40-22. Bridge City committed 14 turnovers while Warren had 11. The Cardinals went just 3-of-9 from the foul line while the Warriors were a woeful 1-for-9.
The Deweyville-Hemphill game was high-octane from the start. The Hornets, however, had no answer for Caswell. Caswell torched the net for 14 points in the first period and 15 in the third.
The Pirates dictated the game throughout.
Deweyville received a double-double from Eric Avila, who had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Seth Williams tallied 10 points. Post Dalton Estes had nine points and 11 boards and Keeton Addison chipped in with 11 rebounds.
Preston Packard led the Hornets with 17 points and had six rebounds. Tommy Singleton notched a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds while Chris Burdette and Luke Hall added 10 points apiece.
The Pirates held a 47-43 rebounding edge. The Hornets had 18 turnovers while the Pirates had 13. The Pirates were 15-of-32 from the line while Hemphill was 8-of-16.
The Lady Pirates outscored the Lady Warriors 10-7 in the final period to snare their victory after falling to host Evadale Thursday. Amanda Vincent led the way with 19 points while Alana Gibson added nine.
The Lady Mustangs erased a 10-2 deficit Thursday to take down Warren 33-25.
WO-S, who got 17 points from Demetrius Heard and eight from Rashanka Winbush, used a 12-4 run in the second to tie the score at 14 at the break.
The Lady Mustangs kept the pressure on in the third with a 14-2 run to make it 28-16 heading into the final frame.
Neither team got on a roll in the game’s final eight minutes as Warren outscored WO-S 9-5 to close out the contest.
In boys action Thursday, the Bobcats defeated Deweyville 82-69.
Seth Williams paced the Pirates with 18 points.
Eric Avila tallied 16 points for the Pirates while post Dalton Estes notched a double-double with 16 points and 13 big rebounds. Colby Caswell added 13 points, four rebounds and four steals. Hayes poured in a game-high 26 points for the Bobcats. Garrett Granger pumped in 19 while Derek Evans had 15 and Bryden Smith 13.
The Cardinals nabbed a pair of victories Thursday. They downed Hamshire-Fannett 50-40. Girouard led the way with 17 points. McAnelly had 15 and Hyde pitched in with nine. Logan Johnson led H-F with 10.
The Cardinals then downed the host Rebels 56-35. Zach Heinze had 15 while Pittman had nine, Girouard eight and Will Veillon seven.
