Bridge City CC team heading to state

HOUSTON The Bridge City Cardinals clinched a spot in the Class 3A State Cross Country Championships by placing second in the 3A Region III Championships Saturday at North Harris Community College.

Joining them will be Lady Cardinal Jessica Franklin, who slid into the 10th position to qualify.

The Lady Cardinals finished a solid fourth as a team, barely falling short of a state berth.

Tim Cude paced the Cardinals, placing third overall on the three-mile terrain by running it in 16 minutes, 36 seconds.

He was followed by teammates Kirby Shepherd (sixth, 16:45), Luke Hebert (26th, 17:41), Arron Lejuene (29th, 17:43), Armando Chavez (32nd, 17:46), Sawyer Hogan (38th, 18:05) and Matthew Wappler (46th, 18:10).

Lufkin Hudson won the team crown with 72 points followed by Bridge City (90), Huffman (99) and Spring Hill (105).

“The boys put forth a great effort,” said Cardinal coach Cody Knight. “I know they’re a little disappointed by not beating Lufkin Hudson because they’ve done that already a couple times this season. Overall, I’m very pleased with their effort. We’ll have another crack at them at state.”

Franklin led the Lady Cardinals, finishing 10th by running her two miles in 12:15.

“I’m excited for state but I’m disappointed my teammates aren’t going to join Me,” said Franklin. “But we really got fired up and I thought we did really well. We were so close.”

Franklin beat her previous best by 30 seconds.

She was followed by teammates Mary Nguyen (16th, 12:31), Megan Shockley (23rd, 12:47), Alex Holland (33rd, 13:09), Ariel Chesson (55th, 13:40), Lisa Huynh (61st, 13:49) and Courtney Meaux (63rd, 13:50).

Palestine won the team title with 104 points followed by Lufkin Hudson (110), Connally (125) and Bridge City (136).

“The girls came so, so close,” said Knight. “I couldn’t be happier for those young ladies. In the last four years they’ve went from 15th, to 10th, to seventh and now fourth at regionals. Several of them ran their personal-best today and they’ve got plenty to be proud of.”

The State Cross Country Championships will be next Saturday at Old Settler’s Park near Round Rock.
