Pirates look to finish season with road win at Hardin

Van Wade
The Orange Leader

HARDIN Coming off their bye week the Deweyville Pirates will try to wrap up their 2009 season by trying to slow the potent offense of the Hardin Hornets.

Hardin (5-4, 2-3) is led by quarterback Myles Tyalor, who has completed 144-of-261 passes for 2,104 yards and 17 touchdowns.

“Hardin is going to want to finish strong too after they lost a tough game to Buna last week that will keep them out of the playoffs,” said Deweyville coach Russell McDaniel. “Their quarterback is a good one. They had a few drops last week but they have a very, very potent offense.”

Marquis James is the Hornets’ leading receiver with 612 catches for 844 yards and seven TDs. D.J. Hall has 33 catches for 552 yards and four TDs.

Running back Mitch Villemez leads the ground game with 637 yards and eight TDs on 71 carries while Taylor has 373 yards and six TDs on 91 totes.

The Pirates (1-8, 0-6) have battled the elements during their bye week.

With all the rains that hit East and Southeast Texas last week, the flood gates have opened and Deweyville residents that live close to the Sabine River are being impacted by flood waters.

Deweyville shut school down at 2 p.m. Wednesday and are off the rest of the week.

“It’s a tough, tough deal,” said McDaniel. “Last year it was a hurricane. This year is flooding. It’s so crazy, the weather has been beautiful for almost six days now but yet we’re dealing with a flood situation.”

It hasn’t stopped the Pirates from working hard in practice.

“Our kids, they’re resilient and they give every ounce of energy they have,” said McDaniel. “We had to pretty much cut out practice Wednesday and Thursday and that’s understandable. Many are delaing with moving their things to higher ground. I’m sure they’ll play hard against Hardin. One thing you can’t do with our kids and that’s fault their effort. They’ve played hard all season.”

Senior Keeton Addison leads the Pirate ground game with 696 yards and four TDs on 110 carries. Backfield mate Trey Craft has 445 yards and two TDs on 95 carries.

Quarterback Michael Williams has completed 55-of-102 passes for 475 yards and three TDs. Eric Avila is the leading receiver with 16 grabs for 133 yards and a TD.
