WO-S stays perfect in 21-3A with 49-7 win over OF

WEST ORANGE All year long the same formula has been working to perfection in District 21-3A play for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs.

Make adjustments at the half and put games on ice.

It worked again Friday night at Dan R. Hooks Stadium as the Mustangs defeated the Orangefield Bobcats 49-13.

After out-gaining the Bobcats 222-115 in the first half and leading 21-7, the Mustangs (8-1, 6-0) poured in 316 yards in the second half to wear down the Orangefield defense.

Quintavious Garrett sped his way to 133 yards on just eight carries with a 48-yard touchdown down run to lead a Mustangs’ offense that rushed for 383 yards.

“We started off with a drive that stalled and Orangefield drove 95 yards and got seven points,” WO-S Coach Dan Hooks said. “Then we started to chip away and all of a sudden you look up and it is 49-7. I am pleased with our effort because Orangefield had been playing some good football over the last few weeks.”

Orangefield (2-6, 2-4) came in on a two-game winning streak after taking down Bridge City and Hamshire-Fannett.

The Bobcats simply were fighting an uphill battle all night long trying to catch up to the speedy Mustangs.

Orangefield was able to put up 243 yards on a Mustangs’ defense which was limiting opponents to just 182.4 yards a contest on the year heading into Friday.

The problem for the Bobcats was 95 of the yards were gained on their first drive of the night.

Orangefield took a quick 7-0 lead in the first half after holding WO-S on downs on its initial drive at the Bobcats 5-yard line.

The Bobcats then drove 95 yards with 47 coming on a reception by Devin Green.

Orangefield then mixed in runs from Peevey and Granger until Granger punched it in from 1-yard out.

Derrick Evans’ kick made the 7-0 advantage with 3:16 left in the first quarter.

Even after the loss, the Bobcats have a chance next week against Hardin-Jefferson to pick up a win and grab one more district win than last year.

“I am going to tell the kids ‘Let’s go finish the season,”’ Orangefield Coach Blake Morrison said. “We want to finish on a high note and finish better than what we did last year. We just have to go back to work.”

The Mustangs took a 21-7 lead into the third quarter and held the Bobcats to a punt on Orangefield’s first possession of the second half.

It took WO-S just four plays to go 51 yards as DePauldrick Garrett, who had 76 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns, went to work.

Garrett had nine yards rushing and quarterback Ortravious Hypolite added two before Garrett showed off his amazing speed.

Garrett broke a number of tackles and then zipped for a 40-yard touchdown run making it 28-7 after a James Haynes PAT.

On its next possession, two plays was all the Mustangs need as Quintavious Garrett to score from 48 yards out giving the Mustangs a 35-7 advantage.

Orangefield quarterback Jared Helton was then intercepted by Seth Thomas setting the Mustangs up nicely at their own 45 yard line.

Helton finished 5-for-13 passing with for 117 yards with an interception and a touchdown.

The Mustangs took advantage of the mistake and went to work on its passing game.

Hypolite would find Ronnie Dennis for 10 yards and Josh Gloston and Roderick Simmons for a total of 18 more in the air.

WO-S got down to the Bobcats’ 16 yard line when DePauldrick Garrett went in to score after banging his way off defenders.

Haynes’ PAT made it 42-7.

The Mustangs finished off their scoring as Kevin Robinson came in to the came and picked up 28 yard on three carries, the last being a 16 yard touchdown gallop. Haynes made it 49-7.

Orangefield was able to score with 4:26 left in the game as Helton found Green for a diving 35-yard touchdown strike.

A failed PAT made the final score of 49-13.

“Quintavious is just getting better and better even with not getting a ton of carries,” Hooks said. “Hypolite is sometimes hit and miss on his deep balls but he was able to complete some nice ones tonight.”

After trailing 7-0, the Mustangs seized the momentum of the game on the back of Hypolite.

Hypolite guided the Mustangs on a 41-yard scoring drive to tie the ballgame at 7.

The junior quarterback rushed in four five yards out after gaining 12 yards on a quarterback-keeper.

On the Mustangs next drive, Hypolite made what could be the most exciting play of the year for WO-S.

Seven plays into the drive, Hypolite took a snap from the Bobcat 10 and rolled right looking to pass.

With nobody open, Hypolite rolled back left and started jolting for the end zone.

Two Bobcat defenders stood in his way and from the 3-, Hypolite went airborne and did his best Superman impersonation on Halloween week.

Haynes’ second PAT of the night made it 14-7.

WO-S made it 21-7 before half after taking over with just a minute showing on the scoreboard.

Hypolite gained 15 yards rushing and then hit Ronnie Dennis for a 4-yard pass. Dennis had six receptions for 47 yards.

Josh Rhodes was then on the receiving end of a 47-yard strike bringing the Mustangs down to the Bobcats’ 7. Rhodes had two receptions for 56 yards.

Two plays later Hypolite found Dennis for his fifth reception of the night, this one going for a score.

Haynes’ kick made it 21-7.

Quintavious Garrett had 54 yards rushing on five carries in the first half.

Granger led the Bobcats in the first two quarters with 32 yards rushing on eight carries with Helton had 57 yards passing on two completions. Bobcat Zach Peevey finished with 65 yards on 12 carries.

Now both teams head into the final week of the season looking for a win to finish off the regular season campaign.

“WO-S is a very good football team,” Morrison said. “There was no doubt in mind what they would be like. We have to go back to work and get ready for the Hawks.”

Hooks and Co. will be looking for yet another district championship.

“We have to go out and play four quarters next week,” Hooks added. “Then we will prepared Coldspring or Cleveland.”

The Mustangs will travel to face the Bridge City Cardinals while the Bobcats will play host to the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks.
