WILDWOOD —
It was a “wild and beautiful” day for both the Deweyville boys and girls cross country teams Wednesday as both teams qualified for the Class 2A Region III Championships as both teams earned second place at the District 23-2A Championships at Wildwood Country Club.
It marks the sixth straight time that the Pirate boys have earned a regionalberth while the girls made it for the fourth straight year.
Winning the boys meet was Kountze with 37 points closely followed by Deweyville with 48, East Chambers 95, Buna 96, and Anahuac 126. There were also runners from Warren and Hardin. The top three teams and top ten runners advance to regionals.
Peaking at the right time, all six Pirates ran their best times of the year. Leading the way for the Pirates was Senior Garrett Haney who finished third in a time of 18:59 over the three-mile course. Haney was followed by Dylan Lambright (sixth, 19:06), Tayber Lebeouf (ninth, 19:27), Michael Nolan (12th, 19:36), Hunter Estes (18th, 20:03), and Dan Smart (24th, 21:01). Haney, Lambright, and Lebeouf also qualified for Regionals as individual runners.
Winning the girls meet, was a dominating Kountze team with 27 points.
“The exciting part of the race was the competition for second through fourth place,” said thrilled Deweyville coach Brad Haeggquist.
The Lady Pirates came in second with 67 points, followed closely by Anahuac with 72, East Chambers 80, and Buna 103. Warren and Hardin did not have any runners.
“We are very proud of our young ladies,” said Haeggquist. “They defeated some very good teams today. Anahuac had beat us badly at the Liberty meet two weeks ago.”
For the Lady Pirates senior Amber Burks came in seventh in a time of 14:58 over the two-mile course.
”This is Amber’s fouth year to qualify individually for Regionals,” said Haeggquist. “Amber has been a big part in establishing the Lady Pirate's Cross Country Team, during our first four years of competition. Amber has been dedicated, patient, and committed to building this program.” Finishing second for the Lady Pirates was sophmore Kyrstan Barlow placing 12th in a time of 15:50. Closely following Barlow was Autumn Hardin (15th, 16:04), Brittan Chance (16th 16:22), Skylar Webster (17th, 16:26), and Hether Peveto (28th, 19:07). Barlow, Webster, and Peveto ran their best times of the year.
”We are real excited for our runners this year,” said Haeggquist. “This is the hardest working team that I have had in the four years I have been in Deweyville. These runners have been completely committed to our program. Hard work does pay off.”
