HAMSHIRE The Orangefield Lady Bobcats’ bid for their first ever district championship in volleyball will have to wait another year.

The Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns claimed the District 21-3A title with a three-game sweep of the Lady Bobcats.

Hamshire-Fannett (8-2) won the match 25-12, 25-15 and 30-28.

Orangefield (7-3) is now tied with Bridge City (7-3) for second pace in the final district standings. Bridge City swept Hardin-Jefferson to clinch the playoffs and a tie with Orangefield. The Lady Bobcats and Lady Cardinals split the season-series this year.

It was unknown Tuesday night if Orangefield and Bridge City would play to break the tie or have a coin-flip to decide the playoff seedings.

The Lady Longhorns came out firing Tuesday night behind the steady play of setter Shelby Mason. Mason had a team-high 13 assists and always seemed to find the right teammate to set.

Shelby Basye and Elizabeth Files each had six kills for the Lady Longhorns.

Orangefield senior Aimee Scales led the match with 12 kills while freshman Rylie Granger had a team-high 13 assists.

Orangefield did its part to help Hamshire-Fannett in the first two games.

The Lady Bobcats committed nine hitting errors in Game 1 alone.

Hamshire-Fannett took the lead right away and never gave it up to Orangefield.

The Lady Longhorns built a 10-point lead at 20-10 as Mason found Basye for a kill.

It did not take much longer for the Lady Longhorns to finish it off when Mason found Ronnie Paggott for the game’s final kill.

Hamshire-Fannett wasted no time in Game 2 jumping on Orangefield.

The Lady Longhorns built a 7-0 lead very quickly in the game. Orangefield committed three errors in the span.

Orangefield was able to cut into the lead at 19-13 when Granger set Scales for a kill yet a total of 12 hitting errors doomed Orangefield who lost Game 2, 25-15.

Orangefield once again fell behind in Game 3 yet took its first lead of the entire match at 10-9 in Game 3.

Orangefield led 13-9 before Hamshire-Fannett’s Liz Davis ended the run with a kill.

Neither team got too far ahead of the other the rest of the way and both had chances to secure a Game 3 win.

In the end Hamshire-Fannett was once again too much for Orangefield as a Lady Bobcats’ hitting error made it 29-28 Hamshire-Fannett and Basye ended the match with an ace.

Kaitlynn Henson had six kills for Orangefield while Ashlee Broussard finished with five assists.
