LITTLE CYPRESS —
The playoff picture in Distict 20-4A is still a bit blurry, but the Vidor Pirates remained in the right frame of mind for the post season with a 35-0 win over the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears at Battlin’ Bear Stadium Friday night.
Vidor (5-2, 3-2) used its ground attack to build a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Pirates took advantage of a fumble on the opening kickoff to get on the scoreboard.
Seven running plays using three ball carriers, Theron Reynolds, Shane Pittman, and Jacob Peevey, covered 38 yards. Peevey got the touchdown from 6 yards. The extra point gave Vidor a 7-0 lead.
The Little Cypress-Mauriceville (0-6, 0-5) offense managed a first down on its first possession. Hunter Gonzales passed to Tevvin Jones for the first. After a Gonzales punt the Bears’ defense did a good job stopping the Pirates’ running game forcing a Vidor punt.
Misfortune fell on the Bears again as the punt was fumbled and the Pirates recovered at the LCM 29. Six running plays would find the score 14-0. Peevey and Pittman split the six carries with Pittman getting the six points from 3 yards out.
The Bears used some razzle dazzle from the spread formation. Jones took a direct snap from center as the quarterback Gonzales went in motion. Gonzales made an excellent lead block as the play worked for 14 yards and another first down for LCM.
The Pirates took over following another punt at their own 33. Reynolds cut loose on a 27-yard run on the first play. Kevin Tate then added 16 yards to the LCM 24.
Back-to-back procedure penalties against Vidor seemed to stall the drive. But Pittman answered with a weaving 34-yard scamper for the touchdown with still 9:55 to play in the first half.
Defensively the Bears played very well the next eight minutes yielding just one first down. LCM’s Zack Sonnier also picked off a Pirate pass for the Bears’ first interception of the season.
With less than two minutes to play in the half and the ball at their own 27, the Pirates switched gears and shifted into a passing game for the first time. Chris Teinert completed five straight passes to move Vidor down the field. Teinert had completions of 19 yards to Matt Conn and two completions for a total of 14 yards to Peevey.
Devan Dart had two big catches on the drive. The first was for 15 yards, and the second was for 7 yards and a touchdown with one tick left on the first half clock. The halftime score saw Vidor up 28-0.
Miscues continued to bite the Bears in the second half. After a brilliant Bears defensive stand when they held the Pirates on fourth-and-two at their 5, LCM turned the ball back over to Vidor just two plays later. The turnover was the Bears third of four lost fumbles on the night. Reynolds scored on the next play on an 8-yard run to bring the score to 35-0.
Jones was the leading ball carrier for LCM with 15 rushes for 75 yards. Gonzales finished with 28 yards on 8 carries.
Vidor flashed two 100-yard ball carriers as Pittman ran for 113 yards on 14 carries and Reynolds had 104 yards on 12 rushes.
Next Friday at Vidor the Pirates have a big matchup with playoff implications against the Nederland Bulldogs. LCM travels to Lumberton next week to play the Raiders.
