JASPER —
Beating West Orange-Stark in every phase of the game, the Jasper Bulldogs took down the third-ranked Mustangs 23-13 at Bulldog Stadium Friday night in non-district football action.
The Bulldogs (2-1) were dominant in the return game and forced four WO-S (3-1) turnovers and limited the Mustangs to just 196 total yards.
Bulldog kicker Juan Mijares booted three field goals to aid a Jasper attack that chewed up 260 yards, 199 of it coming via the ground.”
“Give Jasper credit, they outplayed us in every phase of the game,” said Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “I’m really disappointed in our special teams. Offensively, we sputtered for the most part. I thought our defense hung in there and battled hard all night until the fourth quarter. We’re going to have to regroup with the bye week coming up.”
Bulldog tailback Ben Armstrong rushed 17 times for 107 yards. Quarterback Sam Alvis rushed for 87 yards on 17 carries and passed for 61 on two completions to Jarrodd Adams, who also had two superb kickoff returns.
“That Alvis kid really makes them go,” said Hooks. “They took advantage of some opportunities we gave them and they cashed in.”
Mustang junior quarterback Reggie Garrett completed 12-of-26 passes for 159 yards and was picked off three times.
Senior Trey Franks had five catches for 76 yards. Tailback Britton Lindsey had 18 rushes for 60 yards and caught three passes for 51 yards.
Down 13-0 at the half the Mustangs forced a fumble by Alvis at the Bulldog 3 with 2:15 left in the third and eventually scored on a Lindsey six-yard blast off left-tackle with 11:54 remaining in the game. The Mustang point-after attempt failed due to a bad snap.
Adams answered with a 39-yard kickoff return and a personal foul on the Mustangs on the play moved the ball to the WO-S 36. Two plays later, Alvis scooted around the left end for a 33-yard touchdown gallop, pushing the lead to 20-7 with 11:06 left.
The Mustangs countered with an eight-play, 76-yard scoring march as Garrett had three big pass plays, hitting Franks on 19 and 25-yard completions. He capped hit by hitting senior wideout Justin Francis on a beautiful 20-yard scoring toss along the right side of the end zone. Kicker Justin Sparrow’s boot was good, trimming the margin to 20-13 with 7:29 remaining.
With the Mustangs needing a stop, it was Armstrong that sank WO-S’ sails as he broke loose on a 50-yard jaunt up the middle to the Mustang 6.. The WO-S defense hung tough though and the Bulldogs settled for a 19-yard Mijares field goal with 4:17 left.
The Bulldogs came out firing as Adams took the opening kickoff 74 yards down to the Mustang 12.
However, the Mustang defense stood tall and forced Jasper into a 25-yard made field goal by Mijares with 10:20 left in the first period.
It didn’t go well for the Mustangs on their first series.
After getting an initial first down, the Mustangs were whistled for two illegal procedure calls and Jasper senior linebacker Shane Savant picked off Garrett on an attempted screen pass and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown as the Bulldogs led 10-0 with 8:23 still in the first.
The Bulldogs settled for another Mijares field goal late in the first.
Alvis hit Adams on a 44-yard dart across the middle that got all the way down to the WO-S 15. The Mustang defense stood firm yet again and Mijares ended up connecting on a 32-yard field goal to make it 13-0 with 1:41 left in the first.
The Mustang defense held strong throughout the half that saw its offense turn the ball over four times.
After Darren Beavers picked off a Garrett pass at the Jasper 19 with 6:04 left, the Mustang defense held.
However, Franks would muff a punt at Jasper’s 45 with 2:52 in the half and Jasper once again couldn’t net a first down.
On the last play of the half Bulldog defensive back Cedric McGill picked off a Garrett pass at the Jasper 20 and was finally run down at the Mustang 25 as time expired.
Jasper outgained the Mustangs 119-61 in the first 24 minutes but the Bulldogs had seven penalties for 55 yards.
Jasper had 58 yards on the ground and Alvis was 2-for-3 for 61 yards, both completions going to Adams.
Garrett was 4-for-10 in the first half for 39 yards with Lindsey catching one for 27 yards over the middle. Lindsey also had 27 tough yards on nine carries.
The Mustangs have a bye week next week and will travel to Brookshire-Royal Oct. 2.
