'Cats nab shutout over Longhorns, 52-0

ORANGEFIELD A team knows it is doing pretty well when a backup quarterback scores a touchdown in the first half.

It is also a great indication when their opponents do not have a first down until just under two minutes is left in the third quarter.

Both those things and many others worked to perfection Friday night for the Orangefield Bobcats (3-1) who shutout the Tarkington Longhorns 52-0 on a very special night for Aimee Scales. It is the first shutout for the Bobcats since a 22-0 win over East Chambers in 2005. Orangefield is now 8-0 against Tarkington all-time and has outscored the Longhorns 317-47.

Scales was named Homecoming Queen on a night the Bobcats chewed up 422 yards on 52 carries and limited Tarkington to 80 total yards in the big win.

“I love our guys and I love this atmosphere and team spirit,” quarterback Corey Huckabay said after rushing for 126 yards on nine carries. “It feels great. Every single one of our varsity players contributes to this and we all work our tails off. We think we deserve to win each game and we are never going to look back.”

Jacob Nunez, the backup quarterback for the Bobcats, got his turn in the fun after the starters started to take on-again, off-again breaks in the second quarter.

Nunez made the most of his opportunity and scored from three yards out to make it 35-0 with 1:08 left in the first half.

This came after Evan Guidry already had two touchdown runs and Huckabay had busted loose for a 42-yard touchdown scamper.

“There are a lot of positive things to say after tonight,” Orangefield coach Brian Huckabay said. “I am so proud for our seniors to get a win. It is a special thing to win your senior year on homecoming. Our defense talked all week long about getting a shutout and I am so proud to see them set a goal and achieve it.”

The Orangefield defense, which came in to Friday’s game allowing 325 yards a game, forced two interceptions and no first downs by Tarkington in the entire first half.

The Longhorns did not cross into Bobcats’ territory until reaching the Orangefield 47-yard line at the end of the third quarter.

Guidry got the Bobcats off to a fast start with a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 after Derrick Evan’s PAT with 9:34 left in the first quarter.

Rylan Cook was next for the Bobcats when he scored from 11 yards out after the Bobcats marched 85 yards on their second series of the night.

Evans made it 14-0 with a PAT with 2:06 left in the first.

The bad news for the Longhorns was the Bobcats were not done just because the first quarter was over.

Corey Huckabay quickly made it 21-0 on a 42-yard run and Guidry soon followed with a 31-yard run as Orangefield went up 28-0 with 6:33 left in the first half.

Then Nunez got into the act when he scored to make the halftime score of 35-0.

Cook added another 1-yard touchdown in the third before Evans sent the crowd into a buzz after showing off his leg in a different way than running the ball.

Evans booted a 45-yard field goal with 2:43 left in the third quarter.

Cook scored for the third time on the night with 11:01 left in the game.

This time Cook did it on defense with a 53-yard interception return off Tarkington starting quarterback Brent Johnson.

The Bobcats will now head to Newton to face the Eagles who defeated Silsbee 21-20 Friday.

“I wouldn’t get on the bus if I didn’t think we could win,” Coach Huckabay said. “Confidence comes from doing all the things to make it where you deserve to win. We have done those things.”
