Evadale knocks out Deweyville, 41-14

DEWEYVILLE The Pirates prepared all week for the arrival of the Evadale Rebels on their turf Friday, but the traveling squad seemed to be the team more at home as they ran roughshod over the Pirates 41-14.

“We had a lot of stinking penalties and dumb mistakes tonight to really stop ourselves,” Deweyville head coach Russell McDaniel said. “We didn’t have a drive in the first quarter without some dumb penalty. We just didn’t execute the way we should have tonight.”

Deweyville’s only bright spots on the night came off a 69-yard, eight-play drive with 4:16 remaining in the second quarter, when senior running back Keeton Addison shed off four Evadale defenders to gallop 39 yards to put them on the board at 14-6 after the point-after attempt failed.

Their final drive of the fourth quarter also netted points, both off of junior quarterback Michael Williams’ three-yard plunge into the endzone followed by senior running back Channing Obannon bruising his way to a two-point conversion, tallying 14 points for the Pirates in the contest. The score capped a 10-play, 67-yard drive with 1:09 left in the final quarter.

“On the last drive, the team gave a real good effort,” McDaniel said. “We are a young team and we have to learn from our mistakes. We can’t quit on assignments, but that last drive will give the boys something positive to build on.”

Evadale controlled the game from the very beginning, milking the clock down with an 83-yard, 11-play opening drive that ended up with junior quarterback Billy Nichols bolting into the endzone from 15 yards out midway through the first quarter.

And Nichols wasn’t done, churning in a five-yard run on a first-and-goal play to cap off an 88-yard, nine-play drive with 7:41 remaining in the second quarter, putting the Rebels in control 14-0.

After Deweyville got on the board in the second quarter, Evadale responded right back with senior running back Shelby Stanley busting through the Pirate defense for a three-yard score to cap off a 61-yard, seven-play drive to send Evadale into halftime leading 21-6.

After a Deweyville fumble in the beginning of the third quarter, Nichols led his comrades to the endzone again on a two-yard plunge on a third-and-goal play to cap off a nine-play, 77-yard drive with 3:52 remaining in the third.

And just when it looked like Nichols could just have his way with his feet, he scorched the Deweyville defense with 41 yards through the air to junior tight end Adam Stark for a 35-6 score on the first play of their sixth drive with 1:22 remaining in the third quarter.

The Rebels’ final score came with 3:35 remaining in the contest, when Nichols broke loose again from 14 yards out to cap a seven-play, 44-yard drive to place the “W” in Evadale’s column with 41 points, as the point-after attempt was blocked by the Deweyville defensive line.
