WINNIE What a way to open a season, especially if you’re an East Chambers Buccaneer.

Trailing 28-21 entering the final period, Tony Valastro’s Bucs erupted for 14 fourth quarter points behind junior quarterback Hank Jones’ touchdown runs of 13 and two yards for a thrilling 35-28 come-from-behind win over Orangefield here Friday night.

The Bucs move to 1-0, while Orangefield falls to 0-1.

After trailing 14-13 at halftime, the Bobcats registered a pair of third period touchdown runs from Chase Parker of two yards and Derek Evans of 38 yards (including a two-point conversion run by Cory Huckaby) to take a 28-14 margin with 8:13 left in the third.

The Bucs’ Jones cut the lead to seven at 28-21 with a two-yard run with 2:53 remaining in the third quarter. This set the stage for Jones’ two fourth period scores which propelled EC to victory.

Jones’ fourth TD run of the night came with only 0:32 left in the contest giving EC its first lead since halftime.

The biggest play of the night came just prior to Jones’ winning TD when the Bucs faced a 4th-and-4 at the Orangefield nine with 40 seconds remaining. Jacoby Carrington took a pitch and ran for seven yards to get the critical first down setting the stage for Jones’ winning TD run.

Carrington led the Bucs in rushing with 124 yards on 18 carries. Jones, in addition to rushing for 119 yards on 19 carries, including TD runs of four, two, 13 and two, the EC junior also was 7-of-17 for 110 yards passing and one touchdown.

EC’s Jones made his presence felt early as the ran for one score and threw for another TD in the opening two periods of the season as the Bucs took a 14-13 lead.

Jones ignited EC’s offense by running for a touchdown from four yards out with 3:10 left in the opening quarter, and was on the mark late in the second period hitting Adam Davis with a 37-yard TD strike making it a 14-6 EC lead.

Joe Martinez was successful on both PATs following the Bucs’ two first half scores.

Following Jones late first quarter TD run, the Bobcats tied it at 7-7 with 1:22 left in the period on a Huckaby 15-yard dash.

Huckaby trimmed East Chambers’ lead to 14-13 with only 22 seconds before intermission by rambling 43 yards for another touchdown. Orangefield’s Derek Evans was good on his opening PAT, but missed the tying extra point kick in the final minute of the half.
