BC campers learn, excel at hoop camp

BRIDGE CITY —
Erik Harvey may just be heading to the sixth grade at Bridge City Junior High next year but he had no probelms running the break against Tyler Hyde, who ran the point for the Bridge City varsity last year, or posting up much taller eighth grader Sean Neil Wednesday morning.
Harvey, 11, was soaking a lot of information and skills at the Bridge City Basketball Camp, hosted by Bridge City head coach Tony Knight.
“It’s a blast playing against those big guys,” said Harvey. “They don’t cut us much slack and I like that. Playing against those guys just pushes me to get better.”
Knight, heading into his second season as Cardinal coach, loves working with the little guys at the camp.
“They get to work on a lot of fundamental things,” said Knight. “They also learn about working together and how to pick up the slack for their teammates.”
Harvey knows the camp isn’t all about fun and games.
‘Coach Knight works us hard and we do a lot of drills,” Harvey said. “I’m learning a lot. I know how to get off my shot better and my dribbling is improving.”
Bottom line though, it’s about having fun.
“We want to kids to come out and have a good time and really learn how to enjoy the game,” Knight said. “It’s a good thing to do to promote the sport and it gives you a chance to look at some kids at an early age.”
The camp will conclude today.
