Bears fall to Lamar Consolidated in Game One, 10-2

Using a 12-hit attack and utilizing the arm of Brady Rogers, the Lamar Consolidated Mustangs downed the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears 10-2 in Game One of their best-of-three Class 4A Region III area round series at Galena Park North Shore High School Thursday night.
Rogers (11-1) went the distance, allowing just four hits while striking out nine. After a shaky first inning in which he gave up three hits and two runs, Rogers allowed just one hit the rest of the way.
The Bears (24-9) struck early in the top of the first frame.
Tim Barry reached on a throwing error at shortstop then Jon Gunn laced a bunt slingle past Rogers on the hill. Chad Richard hit into a fielder’s choice as Barry made it to third with Gunn being out at second.
Stefan Leger brought in the game’s first run with a deep single to right to score Barry. Stefan Cloeren followed with a deep double off the fence to push Richard home for a 2-0 advantage.
The Mustangs (23-5) retaliated with three runs of their on in the bottom of the first off LC-M starter Tim Barry.
Eli Sepulveda opened up with an infield single. Cody Abraham, who went 3-for-4, followed with a single to left and Randal Grichuck drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. With one out, Dan Hernandez had a RBI groundout to score Sepulveda and Willis laced a RBI single up the middle to score Abraham and then Grichuck gave the Mustangs a 3-2 edge by racing in to score after a wild Barry pitch.
The Mustangs went up 4-2 in the third inning.
Cody Robinson drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a Hernandez groundout and scored off a RBI single by the hot Willis.
The Mustangs had a big run in the bottom of the fifth.
Grichuck, who scored three runs, had a leadoff single to center and eventually swiped second and went to third on a wild pitch. Robinson then walked and stloe second. Hernandez was able to plate Grichuck with an infield single.
Barry followed with strikeouts of Willis and Ryan Haas but Brandon Hollek was able to drill a two-run double to give the Mustangs a 7-2 edge. Barry was then pulled for reliever Taylor Thompson.
The Mustangs tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Abraham stroked a leadoff triple and Grichuck was hit by a Thompson pitch. With one out, Hernandez drove in his third run of the game by lifting a sacrifice fly that scored Abraham.
After Raul Renavate drew a walk, Haas roped a two-run single to centerfield to up the margin to 10-2.
Thompson worked 1 1/2 innings, allowing two hits while striking out two and walking one.
Barry hurled 4 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits while striking out four and walking four.
The Bears and Mustangs will hook up again in Game Two today at 5:30 p.m. at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu with Game Three, if necessary, to follow 30 minutes after Game Two.
