After a thrilling, three-game series against the Huffman Falcons it is time for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears to focus on a stable of Mustangs.
The Lamar Consolidated Mustangs (22-6) had a first round bye while the Bears (24-8) were busy against the Falcons.
Now the Mustangs and Bears will start up the Class 4A Region III area round at 7 p.m. Thursday at Galena Park North Shore for Game 1. Game 2 is slated for a 5:30 p.m. Friday with Game 3, if necessary, to follow.
The Mustangs are the District 24-4A champions and house a very potent ace pitcher in Brady Rodgers.
Rodgers is 10-1 on the year with a 1.37 ERA in 71 innings pitched with 98 strike outs and 10 walks.
LC-M got impressive pitching performances this past weekend from Dallas Brown and Matt Johnson in Games 2 and 3 against Huffman.
Brown threw 109 pitches in Game 2 for a complete game and gave up six hits while striking out seven batters and walking five.
Johnson gave up just two runs in 5 1/3 innings in Game 3 on four hits with six walks and six strike outs.
“We are very proud of these kids,” LC-M Coach Steve Griffith said after the games on Saturday. “We are going to let them rest and then figure out what is next. Lamar Consolidated is a good team, probably as good a team as we will see this year. Right now I just want the kids to enjoy this doubleheader win.”
In other Southeast Texas baseball action, the Port Neches-Groves Indians will be in New Caney to face Katy Seven Lakes.
Game 1 will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday while Game 2 is at 5 p.m. Friday with Game 3 to follow if necessary.
The PN-G/Seven Lakes winner will face the LC-M/Lamar Consolidated winner next week.
Hardin-Jefferson will face Sweeny with all games being at Aldine High School.
Game 1 will be at 7 p.m. Thursday with Game 2 at 7 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The winner will face the Kingwood Park/Giddings series winner.
Jasper is in a best of three series this weekend with Bellville with all games at The Woodlands College Park.
Game 1 is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday with Game 2 at 5 p.m. Friday and Game 3 will follow if necessary.
The winner will face the Bridge City/Needville winner next week.
Buna is still in the mix and will face Centerville with games being played at New Caney High School.
Game 1 is slated for 7 p.m. Thursday with Game 2 at 11 a.m. Saturday and Game 3 will follow if necessary. The winner will face the Mart/Central Heights series winner.
Kountze will take on Elysian Fields at Lufkin Pollock Central High School starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Game 2 will be at 6 p.m. Friday with Game 3 to follow if necessary. The winner will face the winner of Troup/Hemphill.
Evadale and Fayetville will square off at Conroe High School starting at 7 p.m. Thursday with Game 2 at 7 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary, will be at noon Saturday.
The winner will face the Granger/Bremond winner.
The Nederland Lady Bulldogs will be in action this weekend against Richmond Foster in New Caney.
Game 1 is Thursday at 7 p.m. with Game 2 slated for 7 p.m. Friday. Game 3, if necessary, will be at noon Saturday.
