Octoberfest comes to Deweyville

DEWEYVILLE —
October has arrived, and, with that, so has the annual fundraiser for this town’s public library.
The Friends of the Library for the Deweyville Public Library will hold its third Octoberfest celebration from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, on the library grounds at 212 State Highway 272 in Deweyville. If inclement weather occurs, the event will be held inside the community center at the same location.
According to Connie Buckalew, president of the Deweyville Friends of the Library, Saturday’s event is just the thing for the whole family.
“This is an event we hope will help us increase membership at the library, and, possibly, membership with the Friends of the Library,” Buckalew said. “We will have a book sale, a flea market, a plant sale, food and drinks and other activities for everyone to enjoy.”
Since the theme of the event is “Octoberfest,” Buckalew said children and adults are encouraged to dress in their Halloween costumes or some sort of fall theme.
“We’re really just hoping to have a good turnout,” Buckalew continued. “We didn’t have a membership drive last year because of (Hurricane) Ike, and, honestly, a lot of people still don’t know about the library since it has only been here for three years.”
Buckalew said Saturday’s event is just the first of what she hopes is many other Friends of the Library-sponsored events. She said plans are already in the works for Christmas events and more.
She said the library receives book donations quite often, especially from Reader’s Choice in Orange, and when the library has excess books the Friends of the Library hold them for a book sale to raise funds.
“We hold a book sale, besides this one, each year and we also hold our reading program for one month each summer,” Buckalew explained. “So there is a lot going on with the Deweyville Library that most people may not know.
People interested in joining the Deweyville Public Library or the Friends of the Library can get more information at Saturday’s event. The public is invited to attend.
