B.C. students share living history lesson

Special to the Leader

VIDOR — Members of the 8th Bridge City Red Raiders re-enactment unit have been working hard to prepare for this year’s living history day extravaganza.

Fifty-one seventh and eighth graders from Bridge City Middle School presented a living history demonstration Friday of life in a Confederate army camp circa 1863 in conjunction with the 3rd Texas Artillery.

Students from Bridge City Middle School worked with members of the 3rd Texas Artillery re-enactment unit to investigate and interpret camp life for a Texas unit during the Civil War.

Students traveled to DeRidder, La. on Feb. 22 to observe the re-enactment of the Battle of Hickory Creek. They met, interviewed and observed actors who assisted them in preparing for the presentation of their own living history re-enactment Friday at Claiborne West Park in Vidor.

Students were dressed in period clothing and assumed the roles of various people of the time. They manned several education stations, such as a blacksmith, infantry, flags of the Confederacy, cooking and more, which were visited by students from Bridge City Middle School, as well as students from Port Neches Middle School and C.O. Wilson Middle School in Nederland.
