Pinehurst seeks sales tax

PINEHURST — The City of Pinehurst wants answers to why sales tax figures are down.

“There has been a trend downward and it is not getting any better,” City Administrator Joe Parkhurst said Tuesday morning. “Last December we were over but we have since been going down. We want to know why.”

The council approved a contract with Sales Tax Assurance, LLC, out of Austin, for a Sales Recapture Program.

“Our sole business is to help municipalities with sales tax,” Bob Taylor of Sales Tax Assurance, LLC said. “We can take away the why. We can explain why there are ups or downs.”

The company will use files through the State Comptrollers Office to research and analysis the data to determine if there are discrepancies such as a business possible filing the taxes in the wrong jurisdiction.

Taylor did say that the data used is confidential and not available through open records act.

“Our audit is through the tax office,” Taylor said. “Not through individual companies.”

Taylor said that some reasons the numbers could be done is a business is incorrectly recording the taxes, reporting the taxes to the wrong jurisdiction or ownership changed.

The company is paid 35% of the taxes recovered after the City of Pinehurst receives the taxes.
