May elections are set following Friday’s deadline

ORANGE — There will be seven elections in Orange County when May 11 arrives.

A total of seven cities and school boards will have elections this year after Friday’s 5 p.m. deadline arrived. The cities of Orange, West Orange, Bridge City and Vidor will have contested races on May 11, as will the school boards for Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Vidor and the West Orange-Cove school districts.

After a quick start to the filing process, there will be only two contested races in the City of Orange this May.

Cullen Smith, the District 2 incumbent, will be opposed by challenger Tommy Ferguson, while Annette Pernell, incumbent for District 4, will be opposed by Mary McKenna.

Bill Mello, the incumbent for at-large Position 5, is unopposed.

Three candidates have filed for two seats on city council, so this City of West Orange is also set to have an election.

Incumbents Mike Trahan and Charles Winter will seek re-election this May, but candidate Wayne Wiggins looks to make a run for a seat on the at-large council.

Mayor Roy McDonald is unopposed.

The City of Bridge City will have an election as well this May with two races being opposed.

Incumbent Kevin Mott, Place 1, will be opposed by former councilperson Lucy Fields this May, and Robert Simonton Jr., the Place 3 incumbent, will face challenger Steve Quibodeaux.

Richard Savoy, the Place 5 incumbent, is unopposed.

Although there is only one contested race in the City of Vidor this election year, there will be several changes to the council.

Mayor Ken Crawford will seek re-election this May, but he will be opposed by current Ward 6 councilman Trey Haney.

Incumbents Lynda Courtney and Mallie Bickham, Ward 1 and Ward 4, respectively, have chosen not to seek re-election.

Candidates Justin Horsley and Michael Stephenson have both filed for the open seat in Ward 4, while candidates include Carl LeBoeuf, Ward 1, and Robert Viator Jr., Ward 6, will run unopposed.
