SRA presents Pinehurst with $10k grant

PINEHURST — Repairs to the section of sewer lines on Whippoorwill Street are moving forward.

The Sabine River Authority of Texas presented the City of Pinehurst with a $10,000 grant on Friday morning for the project.

“We really appreciate this,” Mayor Joseph L. "Pete" Runnels said. “We will have no trouble putting this to good use.”

The funds are part of a grant program from the Sabine River Authority as part of the Community Assistance Program (CAP) is part of an Economic Development Initiative SRA started in 2002 to help promote the improvement of the quality and quantity of services essential for the development of a viable community according to Assistant General Manager David Montagne.

Funds provided for the GRANT Program must fall within four project categories, which include water supply; wastewater management; water conservation; and water quality and are limited to $10,000 per project.

“The grant program emphasis is on wastewater,” Montagne said.

Montagne said the waste water is moved to the Adams and Cow Bayous.

“We are working diligently to move those waters to Sabine River. Montagne said.

The bayous are slower moving and the river has more water flow which presents issues with currently discharging into the bayou.

“This [project] helps with infiltration into the water,” Montagne said. “It leads to cleaner waste water.”

City Administrator Joe Parkhurst said the grant is a big help for the project.

“The project is to replace old concrete sewer lines on Whippoorwill,” Parkhurst said. “Many of the old pipes are crushed. In heavy rains this is causing homes to back-up and we are pumping so much more into the Bayou. We will exceed out limits during heavy rains.”

Parkhurst said this section of the sewer system includes both six-inch lines and eight-inch lines, as well as three manholes. He projects the cost of the project to be approximately $350,000.
