March for Parks returns

ORANGE — March for Parks is returning to Claiborne West Park according to Orange County Parks Director Donna Scales.

“We have not participated since Hurricane Rita,” Scales said during the Monday afternoon Commissioners Court meeting. “I am working with St. Mary School to have about 180 students at the park on April 9.”

The event helps raise funds for special park nature projects.

The court approved renewing an existing Investment Zone for International Paper. The zone was originally created for Temple Inland which has since been bought out by International Paper. The request did not include abatements or other incentives.

“The request is for just the zone,” Bobby Fillyaw of Orange County Economic Development Corporation said. “The original order was for a seven year zone which expires April 30, 2014.”

Commissioners also approved the 2015 Orange County Employee’s Holidays. Employees will see a change in the Christmas holidays with only two days off instead of the usual three.

“One day from the Christmas break is moved to the New Year’s holiday,” County Judge Carl Thibodeaux said. “That way the employees can be off Thursday and Friday.”

January 1, 2015 falls on a Thursday.  Without the change, county employees would have to return to work for one day, Friday.

Commissioner Pct. 2 Owen Burton said he was abstaining from the vote.

“I won’t be here next year,” Burton said. “It will not affect me.”

“Then you cannot have those holidays off,” Thibodeaux said with a laugh.

County employees have 13 holidays a year.

“We know it is early to decide the holidays,” Thibodeaux said. “But we had a request from the courthouse so they can have the ability to schedule court dates.”
