The former Texas Highway Information Station, the log cabin currently located near the Orange Animal Shelter, 806 Simmons Drive, will be demolished.
The building was donated to the city of Orange by a private citizen in 2004.
Director of Economic Development Jay Trahan said the storms hurricane Rita in 2005 and Hurricane Ike in 2008 lead to further deterioration of the building during the 5:30 p.m. Tuesday meeting.
“WE may be able to salvage some logs and use them in a future, yet to be determined, project,” Trahan said. “We understand the building is historical in it’s time.”
Council Member District 3 Essie Bellfield said maybe the logs could be used to build something similar.
“We need something to bring people here to Orange,” Bellfield said.
Trahan said refurbishing the building would have been an option if the funds were available.
“It would be difficult to do,” Trahan said.
City Manager Shawn Oubre said even if it was refurbished there were still issues of where to move it and to bring the structure up to code.
“There are a lot of well wishes in the city for it,” Oubre said. “But in it’s current condition, we don’t know if any of it is salvageable.”
The council approved demolition of the building and salvaging what could be saved.
