OC Airport wraps up projects for year

ORANGE — The Orange County Airport is nearing the end of the projects for this year.

The airport received the 2013 Routine Airport Maintenance Grant (RAMP) and has used the funds to improve the airport throughout the year. Each project had to be presented to the Orange County Commissioners Court for approval.

The grant is for $100,000 and the county must match 50%. The cost to the county would be $50,000 if the full amount of the grant is used.

The current projects are:

• Crushed concrete for the windsock area - $1,000

• Replace T-12 lighting with new T-8 lighting in hanger #2 - $1,000

• White paint for the grass strip thresholds and windsock area - $500

• Replace the old windsock with a solar powered windsock - $6,000

The total cost is $8,500 with the county portion at $4,250.

The airport had received complaints concerning the old windsock and selected the solar powered one as a better option. The windsock is lighted for better visibility.

“The change will also lower the electrical costs,” Emergency Management Director Jeff Kelley said during the Monday afternoon Commissioners Court meeting. “This should wrap up the grant for the year.”

Kelley also reported the Keetch-Byram Drought Index for Orange County 14-day outlook is 621. A Forecast Fire Danger map shows the area at moderate danger.

Other county business included:

• Establishing a committee to study the number of busses used by the Transportation Department;

• Approved and accepted the Memorandum of Understanding between Orange County and West Orange Cove Consolidated ISD to secure buses to transport inmates in the event of a natural or manmade disaster.

• Accept the Road Damage Bond from Samson Exploration, LLC during the development of an oil well site on Woodland Ridge.

• Approved the paying of bills for a total of $415,952.42
