The county could have more motorcycles as Orange County Commissioners Court approved an application for participation in the 1033 Surplus Property Program.
“This is where we get our free stuff like motorcycles,” County Judge Carl Thibodeaux said as laughing.
Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt said this is the fourth year the county has been a part of the program.
“Changes to the program are making it more difficult to get in,” Merritt said.
The agreement authorizes the Sheriff to utilize property from the Department of Defense through the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Offices.
The court also approved replacing a vacancy in the Emergency Management Department due to Deputy EMC Ralph Valenciano submitting his resignation.
Commissioner Pct. 2 Owen Burton asked if it was a position the department could wait to fill.
“Which of you (commissioners) want to cover when he (Jeff Kelley) is out of pocket?” Thibodeaux asked the court.
Kelley is the Emergency Management Coordinator for Orange County and one of two people in the department which is also crossed trained to cover the duties concerning the Orange County Airport.
“This is not a department to cut,” Commissioner Pct. 1 David Dubose said. “Just because we have not had a hurricane in a couple of years.”
The court voted 3-1 to approve filling the vacancy. Burton voted against.
The court did not take any action concerning the salary compensation for the elected officials.
Thibodeaux said the item would be on Monday, Sept. 9 agenda.
The court also approved the Disabled American Veterans, a non-profit group, to have a standing reservation at the Gould Community Center for the second Monday of each month. The reservation will be for 6-8 months while a meeting place is built at a church.
