WO prepares for General Election

WEST ORANGE — The General Election is under way at West Orange.

The city council appointed Sybil Hughes as Judge and Bette French as Alternate Judge for the election to be held on May 11, 2013.

Fair Housing month has been proclaimed for the month of April 2013 in West Orange.

The council approved entering into an Interlocal Agreement with Orange County for the purchase of road materials using the Orange County Bid Contracts. The city and county have an agreement to work on one mile of road in West Orange each year.

An ordinance was passed to allow the collection and remittance of a telecommunication tax. The city recently contacted the State Comptroller to question a 12% drop in sales tax for West Orange. The city was told it was one of the only cities in Orange County not collecting the telecommunication tax.

The tax would cause an additional 1.25% increase on the cell phone bill.

The local sales tax is based on where the call originates, unless it cannot be determined, then the sales tax collected is based on where the call is billed.

The local sales tax would be imposed on telecommunication services that occur between locations in Texas.

Others in Orange County that impose local sales tax on telecommunication services are:

Pinehurst

Bridge City

Orange

Vidor

Orange County Emergency Services District No. 3

West Orange City Hall will be closed Friday and Monday in observance of Good Friday and Easter. The next city council meeting is 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 8 at the West Orange Community Center located at 2700 Western Ave. in the rear of the building.
